Re: Graphics Card Performance

I updated my drivers to the 12.11 beta and turned off Aero last night. 12 hours so far without a stuck WU on either machine. I'm hoping that disabling Aero may be the last piece of this puzzle. Stay tuned.

I got a few stuck work units on POEM when I was running multiple work units on an HD 7770 with the previous drivers (12.8 or 12.6), and I never run Aero, so I doubt that Aero is it.

Just because Aero didn't stop the problem at POEm doesn't mean it won't make a difference here. Only time will tell.

Yes, I have in fact just enabled Aero to see if it fixes an occasional crash I get in POEM, and some video editing errors. It may be that some programs assume it is on, or off as the case may be.

Also, I am trying your trick of disabling the watchdog timer, though I no longer get stuck work units. But I think there should be another quote at the end.

Was messing around trying to treak again and found something that could help. After adjusting core speed and memory on my 6950, started messing with the power adjustments. Have had issues on and off but since I adjusted the power settings (CCC) to +5, haven't had a issue yet. Only been 2 days though so don't take this as a fix but wonder if the card was starving for power. This adjustment also reduced crunch time by around 10 seconds. Could be just a fluke that it helped too.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

What was the other fix? So far I haven't had a driver issue either. Not sure why but my 5670 on a same type board has never displayed any driver issue.

Besides updating to driver 12.11 I disabled Aero. It seems the driver problem only affects the higher end cards running multiple tasks.

I loaded up 12.10 and still had issues until I adjusted the power setting. Also, tried to lower memory to lowest possible settings and my system locked up. Put that back to 1400, processor at 800 and power set at +5. Been humming along ever since. Waiting on UPS to deliver new card today.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

Got the card installed. Went from 3:30 minutes to 2:00 minutes to crunch 1 wu. Thought it would be a bit faster. I did uninstall CCC, reboot, then reinstalled CCC for the 7870. I cannot have CCC screen on or I get the driver kicking out. Also had to bump up power to +5. Running like a champ now. Does this time crunched sound about right?
Also, was running GPUZ to monitor temps and stuff. It was showing 0 GPU load while it was crunching the wu, then BSOD. Restarted, placed my settings in CCC, closed that and now its crunching fine. Will be trying the app file tomorrow to see if I can crunch 2 at a time. Nice thing I see so far is only about 60% load while crunching vs 88% on my 6950. Plus I don't have to run the fans manually at this card runs real cool. Impressed so far.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

@Bearcat. I would strongly recommend you remove CCC and use MSI Afterburner to control your GPU settings. CCC has a problem driver that can cause random BSODs for no apparent reason. Have you done the registry change to stop windows from restarting your drivers? That too will also go a long way toward making things run smoothly. With your 7870 @ 60% load with 1 task running 4 should be no problem.

Remove the entire program or just the manager? Am assuming to just keep the sdk as that has the open cl driver, right?

Have 2 crunching now. Same time as when running one. Haven't been able to receive any new wu's though as am getting "No app version found, disregarding". Have it set in app file to crunch both GPU and CPU. Will wait until it runs dry and hit update a few times to see what happens.
