Re: Graphics Card Performance

@Bearcat. If your 6950 is running @ 88% you should be able to run at least 2 and probably 3 WUs at a time.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

OMG!!!! 9? I guess you aren't doing any other work on that computer, or at least not much. Unless you have more than a Ht Hex Core CPU.

EDIT:
Wait a minute? "Processing time is down to 23 seconds"? I'm not following how it is possible to reduce the processing time by increasing the number of units running at once. My processing time increases for every extra unit. Please explain. Thanks.

HT doesn't really make you able to run two tasks with one core, there is only one execution unit in your core.

The processor is a FX-8120 @ 4Ghz is plenty for this many tasks, but WCG is limited to running 9 work units when I was trying to run 16 to fully saturate my processor and further eliminate droops.

How are you not following? The GPU isnt being used when the CPU is working, and the CPU isnt being used when the GPU is crunching. Open MSI Afterburner Hardware Monitor and monitor your GPU usage, you'll find there is a huge gap where the GPU is doing nothing, and monitor task manager to see a huge gap where the CPU is doing nothing, so much potential lost. If you run one or two work units. The more work units you run, the less gaps you will see, this will keep both your GPU, CPU, and RAM running at the best they can. A single 7970 can complete the GPU portion of a work unit in around 17-18 seconds, so we are trying to reduce the amount of CPU time by increasing the number of work units beyond the max cores you have. The more real cores you have the better.

Also, there is no lag on this machine, I've been watching Hi10 10 bit anime on this machine while doing this, but recently just installed Synergy so I can move my mouse off the side of my screen and my mouse cursor pops up on my Ubuntu machine so I am doing all of my x264 encoding and anime watching there and give HCC extra CPU cycles.

I have EVGA Precision open and can see the drop you speak of for the GPU. I have a CPU monitoring gadget on my desktop the shows my CPU usage, and it does not drop when the GPU is working. I'm wondering if there is that much of a difference in how AMD and Intel chips handle these units. confused

When I added a second task to my 590s (now 8 instead of 4 at a time) it added a full minute to the time shown in BOINC Manager. I can only imaging that adding another task to each GPU would add at least another minute again, making it not worth the change in my opiinion.

I might have to look into getting an all AMD setup to try this for myself.

Will try it again after my 7870 comes in and put the 6950 in the other crunch replacing my 5670. Will try that fix in hope it will fix the driver issue.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

AMD has better multicore performance in general, I would probably look into the FX-8350 releasing on the 23rd. It is the new Bulldozer version 2 architecture (Piledriver), 8 cores with a stock frequency of 4GHz. I would love to see how well it can overclock reasonably, and to see Phoronix compile some benchmarks with the bdver2 architecture to see the new architectural improvements. On Windows, Intel is at an advantage though, but on Linux the Intel bias doesn't exist, so ideally we want to get this project on Linux asap.

I wonder if OpenCL has improved any.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

It will not run any CPU projects at the same time with the app_info file unless you also add them into the file.

Edit your device profile at WCG so that only HCC is checked and choose "Allow work on CPU": NO.

Save and then run an update command in BOINC.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

My bad. I thought everyone knew that using the app_info would cause you to lose your CPU tasks. You can run CPU tasks with GPU tasks when using the app_info it just requires more code be added to the app-info file for each of the CPU projects you want to run.

That annoying display driver crap is Windows fault. What happens is the new video stack in Windows Vista/Seven runs seperate from the kernel so that video driver restarts are possible without a full reboot. Thus preventing many video related BSOD's. However as a part of this if the driver doesn't respond to windows fast enough windows automatically restarts the driver and throws an error when actually nothing could be wrong. It is really annoying on some systems. Some systems have higher internal latency (can't remember what that is called right now) that cause this to trip. There is a registry fix for this that I tried and it worked for me.
Copy and paste the following into notepad and save it as a .reg file and run that to add the following to the registry. Copy and paste all of it. I named mine repair.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Watchdog]
"DisableBugCheck"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Watchdog\Display]
"EaRecovery"="0

Right click on the file and open with registry editor. It will ask if you want to add this to the registry, select yes. That fixed the display crashes for me. As always, there are dangers when working in the registry so try this at your own risk.

I can't take credit for this fix. You can find the thread about it here XtremeSystems

IMPORTANT UPDATE.

My original setting in this post was "EaRecovery"="1
That was incorrect. That value needs to be set to 0.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windo...f553893%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Sorry for the error. That was the original info I was given. I have edited the original post. The 1 setting did help with the stuck WUs but didn't completely stop them. We'll see how the new value completes the fix.

Thanks nano. My new card comes in thursday so will wait until I do the swap to see if I still have issues. Hopefully not, please post any issues that may pop up from this fix.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

I see that the Nvidia GTX 680 is way worse than a GTX 580 or 560. Why such a big difference ?

By design, Nvidia doesn't want to hurt their workstation GPUs!
