Re: Graphics Card Performance

It seems like you are saying you want to run both CPU and GPU units for HCC. To run CPU units of any kind from WCG you would need to have the right code for that project to add to the app_info file. Until that information is available, you can run other BOINC CPU projects that are outside of WCG without a problem.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

Question for someone who might know...videos stutter quite a bit when running GPU workunits. Anyone know how to fix this?

Already tried unchecking "use gpu while computer is in use" button, but it doesn't stop my gpu from computing while watching a movie. Thanks to anyone with ideas/advice.

have you tried pausing gpu? Right click boinc in task bar and check snooze gpu.

Try un-checking snooze GPU, after the video has started.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

I updated my drivers to the 12.11 beta and turned off Aero last night. 12 hours so far without a stuck WU on either machine. I'm hoping that disabling Aero may be the last piece of this puzzle. Stay tuned.
After days of getting my i7-3770k's graphics to handle the Win7_64bit UI to show on my monitor vis-a-vis free my HD7770 to handle HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs, I noticed that if I leave the monitor else let an HCC-GPUv6.56-WU remain without focus* for some time, I end up with a stuck HCC-GPUv6.56-WU most of the time.

-- Should I try disabling the watchdog timer for the HD7770*^ as a workaround**?
-- What about the i7-3770k's integrated-GPU: Does that have anything to do with the stuck/frozen HCC-GPUv6.56-WU considering my setup?

Notes:
*I have to let BOINC_v7.0.28 remain open and click on an HCC-GPUv6.56 displayed as in-progress to give the WU the attention. If that attention is not provided after 2-3 minutes, a stuck WU almost always occurs. If one does occur, I pause the WU and resume, and that fixes the freeze as long as the focus is again provided. If the WU remains stuck for longer than 10 or so minutes, there is some but not guaranteed chance that the WU will get out of the freeze. The longest time I've seen is about 30minutes. My machine typically completes an HCC-GPUv6.56-WU in about 2m30s, say 3minutes, so worst case, about 27minutes is wasted per one HCC-GPU-v6.56-WU, and I can't be doing that nor baby-sit on my machine.
**I still want to have Aero turned on and have the stuck-WU problem be solved at the same time. There has to be a way... praying
*^Using Catalyst_12.8.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

I have disabled the watch dog timer but still get it trying to get my 6950 to work. Starting to wonder about PSU as my 750 watt can be heard kicking in pretty good when it tries to crunch a GPU, but then it kicks the video driver. When I had my 5670 installed, no issues whatsoever.

Update to 12.11 beta. That should fix the problem. If it doesn't disabling Aero is the last choice that I know of for now.

Does your PSU have the 6 pin power connectors for the card or are you using molex to 6 pin adapters? Adapters could be a problem. Noises from PSUs are usually not a good sign.

Re: Graphics Card Performance

Actually have two 8 pin, 6 +2 connectors. No adapters. Not really a noise but can definately hear it kick in. Decided to leave it crunch just cpu for now since the 7870 is crunching 4 now.

I just updated to Catalyst_v12.10 about 24hrs ago. But still no luck with my 'baby-sit-else-get-a-stuck-WU' issue. I next tried to set the Win7 Turn off the display to a value of Never and then clicked (to highlight) on each and every HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs displayed in BOINC_v7.0.28, and guess what... it is working so far with Aero turned on!

Doing more experimentation right now to try to see what combinations exactly did the trick:
1] Set the Turn off the display to a value of Never.
2] BOINC_v7.0.28 opened or minimized or closed.
3] HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs highlighted or not.

... Stay tuned.
