For the card performance interested,... was the topic I vaguely recollect, visit for ATI: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/projet.py?...uer+Cancer+%28ati_hcc1%29
There's also an NVidia: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/projet.py?...+Cancer+%28nvidia_hcc1%29 And amazingly, it gives both CPU and GPU times. Pick your top combo. ![]() For sure, share your WU crunching time by joining, at hardly no CPU time: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/ Always up-to-date without the need to ask. |

There is another way---build another cruncher Oh no, betcha by golly wow -- allow my wallet to take another hit?... Gee, it does cost to keep growing strong... ![]() ![]() -- I still want to have Aero turned on and have the stuck-WU problem be solved at the same time. There has to be a way... Update to 12.11 beta. That should fix the problem. If it doesn't disabling Aero is the last choice that I know of for now.![]() -- Using Catalyst_12.8. Doing more experimentation right now to try to see what combinations exactly did the trick: 1] Set the Turn off the display to a value of Never. 2] BOINC_v7.0.28 opened or minimized or closed. 3] HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs highlighted or not. ... Stay tuned. ; FWIW I believe you're making this harder on yourself than it needs to be. I can pretty much assure you that your problems will go away if you update boinc to 7.0.36 and update your drivers to 12.11 beta. Uninstall the 12.10 driver and run a program called Driver Sweeper to clean things up then install the 12.11 beta driver. Turning off Aero is that last trick if the first 2 don't work. I've had 0 stuck tasks in 3 days with the above updates.

You're probably right, I'm making things harder on myself... but it's the price I'm willing to pay to try understand the nature of an issue behind the symptoms... and I think I'm closing in. ![]() With my monitor hooked up my i7-3770k's integrated-GPU, my HD7770 is doing its fastest crunching performance yet -- and do it all with absolutely no video-lag! That is something I expected to happen all along and so far the results confirm it. With the 'Turn off the display' setting on 'Never', and BOINC_v7.0.28 opened or minimized but the WUs not highlighted: No stuck-WU. I just closed BOINC_v7.0.28 and let's see how that goes... stay tuned... ; ---------------------------------------------------- edit1_2012.10.28Su.2014.utc: -- After 58 HCC_GPUv6.56-WUs crunched, not one WU was stuck as long as the 'Turn off the display' setting is set to 'Never' regardless of BOINC_v7.0.28 opened or minimized (with the HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs highlighted or not), or closed. -- Testing now to set '5 minutes' as the value for the 'Turn off the display' setting. edit2_2012.10.28Su.2206.utc -- I got the results. Got the results:
With a value of '5 minutes' for the 'Turn off the display' setting, the issue of a stuck HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs returned: 9 out of 70 such WUs clocked at 5 to 7 minutes elapsed time with 1 WU clocking 3m46s (when I opened BOINC and clicked on this WU and with that click, the WU got focus and therefore got out of the stuck state) while the remaining 60 clocked under 3minutes. With the results thus far, the hypothesis now seems to be that: Setting a value of 'Never' to the 'Turn off the display' Windows-setting may have left the HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs with focus and this focus is needed to have the said WUs not get stuck. The above hypothesis reconciles nicely with my other observations: 1] A closed BOINC can't possibly supply focus to any WU. The HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs that did not get focus while being crunched gets stuck. 2] When an in-progress HCC-GPUv6.56-WU is highlighted, the act of highlighting forces the focus on the said WU. The said WU does not get stuck. 3] When an in-progress HCC-GPUv6.56-WU does not get attention after 2 to 3 minutes, that WU is likely to get stuck. Why 2 to 3 minutes? Because that's exactly the time my typical HCC-GPUv6.56-WU completes. With every such completed WUs, the focus is gone with that WU. The next HCC-GPUv6.56-WU to execute does not automatically get the focus, and without that focus, the said WU is likely to get stuck. As a bonus, I have Aero turned on just how I like it! Just have to remember to manually switch off the power to my monitor when I'll be away. ![]() ; |

After 10 days of running one of my rigs running an 980X CPU with a GTX680 Nvidia GPU posts an average of 120'000 (ppd) points per day. This is with stock GPU and CPU frequencies, and running only one WU at a time on the GPU.
----------------------------------------The same machine running only as CPU posts around 45'000 ppd. I have upgraded the drivers of my GTX580 boards to the latest version and running three units now with 980X CPU's. I will post some results in the coming days. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Oct 28, 2012 11:15:14 PM] |

@andzgrid: Why are you torturing yourself? Wouldn't you rather have a rig that is set and forget with 0 stuck tasks?

I'm tortured no more, what with me having just found a work-around to my stuck HCC-GPUv6.56-WUs issue and as I have said from time to time here at WCG: it is not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase! ![]() ; |

All invalids, hung, and errored WUs are caused by corrupted OpenCL package, corrupted driver installs, unstable GPU VRAM (decrease frequency and/or increase voltage to memory here), unstable core (increase core voltage), unstable RAM and/or CPU overclock. If your CPU/RAM is even the slightest bit unstable, it will cause havoc. Make sure all systems undergo intense prime95 and furmark stress testing before unleashing them on BOINC. However, Furmark won't catch the GPU memory errors, so let invalids be an indicator that you need to lower the memory frequency. As well, make sure all equipment is properly cooled, heat is noise, like a microwave power on when you are talking on a cell phone, the more heat, the more likely an error is produced. While your input is appreciated to say all is caused by this or that is going to be confusing to many because it simply is not true, especially the one about hung WUs. Stuck WUs most often happen because the new video stack in Windows runs separate from the kernel so that video driver restarts are possible without a full reboot, thus preventing many video related BSOD's. However as a part of this if the driver doesn't respond to windows fast enough windows automatically restarts the driver and throws an error when actually nothing could be wrong. This can happen in any version of Windows above XP SP1. The driver restarts but the WU doesn't causing it to hang. It's a Windows problem. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windo...f553893%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Focus has nothing to do with it. Aero has no affect on your ability to crunch either. What I stated is a hypothesis, not a dogmatic assertion alluding to a possible ultimate truth to which you come out loud and proud to contest. And what makes you so sure that focus has nothing to do with the situation I described? And who said anything about Aero affecting any one's ability to crunch? Ah yes, of course, it was you and only you.; [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 29, 2012 11:50:40 PM] |
