During my tour in the Navy I served on 4 aircraft carriers.
----------------------------------------The USS Constellation (named for the stars on the US flag) CVA-64 was one of them and it was decommissioned and towed to Bremerton. Some ships are not moth balled but are stripped down and sold for scrap metal. I do not know the location of the USS Lexington, Independence, and Shangri La all of which are older than the Constellation. The Lexington was assigned to the Gulf of Mexico for training pilots at NAS Pensacola and may still be there.

Decommissioned - I take from reading above posts - would mean roughly
retired from active duty. Then they can be mothballed - which must mean they are kept functional at some level, or they can be scrapped - which must mean they are cut into bits and pieces and recycled. Is that correctly interpreted? Now, I don't know about the Navy, but when reading "We Were Soldiers Once - and Young" I had my most recent "non-commisioned" and "commisioned" frustration. Does it mean having a firm contract as opposed to some sort of free lancing or what? I simply cannot get my brain to process it. |

decommissioned is retired ship....
----------------------------------------they are then mothballed until it is decided on what will happen next and either become a museum or sunk for a reef or recycled. you can really free lance a ship like that... one of those carriers takes 3150 for manning and they all have to be trained you probably could take a minimum crew of 800 but they would need almost 5000 to be full crewed with an air-wing and all.. ![]() |

Thank you, nasher.
Now I understand decommissioned. The non-commissioned or commissioned mostly takes "officer" after them. If at some point you could ignite my brain into grasping the concept of what it means, I should have one mystery less in my life - and room for a new one. So, both you, nasher, and my ex captain are navy people. What was your field on board the aircraft carriers, rcc? |

In the US Navy, a commissioned officer is someone that has a college degree and is an "officer", with a rank, and is appointed by a commission.
----------------------------------------i.e. Ensign, Leiutenant JG(Junior Grade), Lt., Lt. Commander, Commander, Captain, ...Fleet Admiral. An officer has a college degree and may attend a military academy such as Annapolis or West Point. A non commissioned officer is a subordinate officer that was not appointed by a commission or commanding officer, usually an enlisted person. An enlisted person just has to sign a bunch of paperwork and pass a physical, they are generally known as sailors. Enlisted have a rate not rank, i.e. Seaman, 3rd Class Petty Officer, ...Master Chief Petty Officer are all rates. There is a class of officers known as Warrant Officers that start as enlisted and work their way up to officer. A Warrant Officer is higher than an enlisted person but is below a commissioned officer. Pilots are officers, sailors that handle and maintain aircraft are enlisted. We had a saying; it takes a college degree to break it and a high school diploma to fix it.

As you may or may not know I just built my first PC.
----------------------------------------The subject of CPU temperature appears to be a controversial topic. After reading this thread I no longer believe that temperature is high priority, in fact it is not worth all the attention it gets. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/252233-29-tjunction-tcase However, I would recommend a CPU cooler for the newer mufti-core PCs.

Thank you, rcc. You provided the key that unlocked my blocked brain.

Everything that has been received is together on the PC build and it is running stable at 4.3.
----------------------------------------The SSD is in and running Raid 0 mirroring the HDD. Still have not received the fan control panel that will control 1-6 fans from the motherboard. The mobo is 4 pins and this fan control will control the speed of 3 pin fans. Hey newegg, stop sending mobos with 4 pin control and cases with 3 pin fans. The roar of 5 fans (6 if you count the power supply) running wide open is so loud I can't hear the phone ring. Having gotten my sapphire badge I will not be running HFCC so that others that need the work units can have them.
