Possibly another brown shoe sailor, I don't feel quite so alone.
----------------------------------------I was in Aviation Fire Control (AQF), no, not the fire extinguisher, the radar, gun sight, Sidewinder missiles, rockets, etc... for F8 Crusaders. My squadrons were VF-174, VF-132, and VF-62. If I can find the pictures I will put my squadron patches in my signature. The VF-132 patch was designed by Walt Disney Studios and has quite a history behind it.

Well, rcc, I think both you and nasher
----------------------------------------should stray over and say hello to Viper97. You never know how closely related you are - the man was born in Newport, Rhode Island, where I spent many a day trying to peddle my professional raingear to the fishermen - and in Point Judith/Jerusalem. Bib pants and such ![]() Almost forgot! Looking forward to seeing your badge and hearing the Walt Disney story [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 8, 2011 7:20:19 PM] |

I found a sketch of the VF-132 squadron patch and put it in my signature.
----------------------------------------The patch was originally created for VBF-81 in World War 2. That would be January 1946 and the artist was Hank Porter. VBF-81 became VF-14A VF-14A became VF-132 The patch is based on the Disney character Black Pete, which is a cat (not a dog). Mickey Mouse would not fear a dog, but would fear a large mean cat. The character is also based on Admiral Hoskins, whom is the only high ranking naval officer with one foot. Captain Hoskins was Commanding Officer of the USS Princeton when it was sunk in the battle of Leyte Gulf. During the sinking he lost his right foot. When the Princeton was replaced Hoskins insisted that he be the skipper. Later in time VBF-81 was on board the Princeton CV-37 and the patch was painted in the hanger bay to honor then Admiral Hoskins.

Is anyone else having problems with their firewall sand-boxing BOINC?
----------------------------------------On my recent build Comodo screwed up some Beta work units, which is unforgivable. So I took Comodo firewall out and run just Windows 7 firewall. Now it is happening on one of the AMD PCs. Do we need a firewall if we are behind a NAT router? Why not take Comodo off of all my PCs?

That's a fine badge - and a fine story, too.
Thank you, rcc. What does all the VF-this and VF-that stand for? The warfare business has so many abbreviations and code names that it makes it hard to be a spy and get those medals from Yukon! in Jekatarinburg. |

The British, you have to love them.
----------------------------------------Give them a daily ration of a pint of Rum and anything can happen. little mermaid, If you plan on doing any spying this forum is not a good place as it is patrolled by the forum police. The VF means it is a heavier than air (as opposed to a hot air balloon) fixed wing (as opposed to a helicopter) fighter squadron. The VBF means that it was a combination bombing and fighting squadron. Some aircraft at the time were good for both purposes. VF-132 was equipped with F8 Crusaders, an all weather fighter, the first aircraft to exceed 1,000 MPH, and the last aircraft with four 20 mm cannons (guns). It also carried AIM9 Sidewinder missiles (air intercept missiles), Sparrow missiles (radar beam riders), rockets (totally uncontrolled), and pilots with hangovers. It seems that pure oxygen is an instant cure for hangovers so some pilots were known to have a few drinks the night before flying. Now that I have told you the secret code I will probably be shot.

Thank you for the info. My brain is really not born for military stuff
- I do my best, but VF means heavier than air Forum Police -eeeeek, I know, I have been paranoid ever since my post to nasher vanished, evaporated, disappeared, drowned, exploded as our Base Camp Forum did was pulverized ... well, just wasn't there any more ... But IT teaches you work-arounds, and now we have nasher here where he belongs rcc, you are in a double whammy - the DOD special agents and the Forum Police ... Let's make the best of it: a good meal instead of some amateur imposter - and a double Martini - shaken, not stirred After You've Gone |

VF is heavier than air fixed wing fighter, VA is heavier than air attack, etc...
----------------------------------------I thought that Scurvy was a thing of the past, why the daily ration of rum? Tradition?

In short: Either VF is heavier than air
---------------------------------------- Rhum and the British Navy: I should think in order to make them forget their miserable living conditions. I was on board HMS "Victory", Admiral Horatio Nelson's ship, as sits docked there in Portsmouth, England. The living quarters for the - didn't you call it "brownshoes"? - sailors were far from the "Ruby Princess"'s on which our Guitar Man cruises the Caribbean these days. Liquor was also used in large quantities to preserve the body of Nelson. But wiser people know more: "How was admiral Nelson's body transported back to England after his death at Trafalgar?" "In a barrel of brandy, although some people believe it was Rum. Rum wasn't used because it was the staple drink of the British navy in the days when fresh water was hard to obtain at sea. Brandy was always carried as (a) an alternative for officers and (b) as a general anaesthetic and for its antiseptic properties. Incidentally unto the present day Rum is still referred to as "Nelsons Blood" in naval circles." [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 9, 2011 8:14:23 PM] |
