Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

It seems that a little mermaid has a sweet tooth. German class? How many languages do you need?

nasher, happy thanksgiving to you and we are glad to have you on the team.

Here is a quick I survived:
In school we were building science fair projects and I thought how cool it would be to have a Jacobs Ladder.
So I gathered all of the parts including a 10KV oil ignition transformer.
The project drew a lot of attention at the science fair and it was fun explaining the project.
After the science fair was over and the project taken home I could not leave well enough alone.
While playing with the transformer some part of my right hand got too close, and then I was kicked by a mule.
I was standing on a concrete floor in our basement and believe that the arc went to my finger and out my shoe to the floor.
I ran upstairs to tell my mother what happened but I couldn't breathe.
The breathing problem gradually went away and my voice came back.
The science project went onto the trash heap and I went on to become a __________ (please provide a word you feel is appropriate).

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

That was a grand tale, mon ancien capitain smile
Let me fill in the blank: You are a trusted business man with
a weakness for building computers = a nerdy business man,
who shall never again feel that much attracted to a 10KV oil ignition transformer.
And yes, I have a sweet tooth only controllable by just saying NO at the sweets shelves
(there seem to be more of those than of those with nourishing food)
It seems that a little mermaid has a sweet tooth. German class? How many languages do you need?
- as many as possible; I like being able to speak a few words of the language when visiting abroad
- even if it's only sbasibo or dos cervezas ...
Italian is something of an aesthetic drive, tho
- the most beautiful language of the world
- whipped cream for your ears

rose nasher, I'm so glad you're here.
I think mein ehemahliger Kapitän is beginning to believe he has a permanent member called nasher

Yes I am your alumnus captain and yes it is permanent.
Of course we don't have any rules to complicate things, just slogans.
"The less you do the more you do"
"The team with a theme"
"For anyone that thinks of themselves as a survivor"
"No. I don't want to buy a good used oil ignition transformer"

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

The computer build is coming along just fine.
The case has 4 fans, and the CPU cooler has 2 more but won't be able to use one cooler fan.
The cooler is big and it is a tight fit. The center fan has to be removed to install the cooler.
After the cooler is installed there is no clearance to latch the fan to the cooler.
5 fans should be plenty.
I do wish that they could settle on a standard for 4-pin fans.
This mobo has fan speed control (4-pin) but the fans are 3-pin which does not support speed control.
Bumped the RAM up to 16GB for an extra $70; going up to 32 GB would cost about $300-$400.
I'm going to look into a 64GB SSD to use as cache. According to the mobo box SSD caching and HDD is 4x+ faster than HDD alone.
It won't cache more than 64GB so why buy bigger?
It's ready to power up but I don't want to stay up all night playing so I am calling it a day.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

There is a problem with the PC build.
There is power to the fans, HDD, and DVD burner until I plug in the power to the motherboard; then there is no power anywhere.
My power supply tester shows all voltages except -5v, which I believe is correct.
The power supply is smart and my guess is that it sees a problem on the motherboard.
Can't find anything wrong so will take it apart and give everything a good visual.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

Well, motherboards can be bad.
I bought a HP laptop high end. It acted strangely. It had Vista which was new to me,
so I had a hard time diagnosing it. But I put my money on the motherboard.
The shop said it was me - several times - until a CD
with their music got stuck, because everything went bananas unexpectedly.
It was the motherboard.
I wrote a letter to the chain store owner and HP in Denmark.
HP didn't give a damn, the store owner apologised and gave the money back.
I bought a custom built at a small shop.
It behaved strangely. It had Windows XP, and that would not act this way.
You're right. The motherboard again. Kaputt!
Now I have a Lenovo PC and a Lenovo laptop.
They run.
And no HP product shall enter my front door ever.

Can you tell me: How big is the statistical probability of getting TWO faulty motherboards in a row?
I would think very small.

I hope you'll be able to find out what the culprit is.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

little mermaid,
I have Dell, HP, Gateway and the tech support is equally bad for all.
The probability of having two mobos in a row bad is very low unless you live in Denmark.
Human error on the other hand is universal.
Here is a write up I did some time ago that breaks it down into categories and explains the possibilities to correct them:

Random errors are due to human factors resulting in a 1 in 500 rate and cannot be reduced or eliminated

Systemic errors are due to processes, procedures, work environment, training, etc... and can be reduced from 1 in 70 to 1 in 2000 but cannot be eliminated

The total human error rate can be improved from 1 in 60 to 1 in 400, which is a 667% improvement, and it is near the limit of reasonable effort for the results received

So, based on probabilities it is most likely your fault and it can't be fixed.

Next topic,
Okay, the problem is solved and the PC is running work units.
Could have been a loose connector or cockpit trouble.
Either way I am the only person involved so it is most likely my fault.
It booted up at 3.5Ghz so will leave it there until I get a SSD.
There are three BIOS settings for overclock, this is the default (lowest).
Final fan count is: 4 case, 1 cooler, 1 power supply, and 1 left over.
With the side covers off it sounds like a data processing center.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

nanoprobe,
Thanks for coming back, you are always welcome to stop by or stay.
From what I remember you ran up some good stats in short order.
The rest of us are just plugging along.

houal,
Your work unit results are starting to show on the stats.
Always glad to have new crunchers on the team.

msgdlsmith,
You joined the team some time back but never registered a device or returned work units.
Is there something we can do to help you start contributing?
I think you have the worst part of it behind you.
Don't be afraid to ask for help.
