Re: Minnesota Crunchers

With the temps around 80 now, turned down my octo's to 4 cores to keep temps down. I'll bump em up when we drop later in the week.
Yeah, that piece of hail is pretty big. Hope this summer doesn't get as wild as down south did. Would rather have 20 feet of snow than tornados. Suggest folks have some kind of scanner or device that sounds off the sky warn system. Mine has been on past couple of nights.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yeah, nobody needs the hassle and damage of either the hail or the tornados.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

So COOL!!!

Darn I'm envy....

We do not have anything even close of that size, just some poring granny hails...

This is simply because we do not have tornadoes, uragans or anything here, so hails come down on first try...
I think that hail has move like yo-yo several times on atmosphere before finally get enough mass to brave any wind...

Propably hit ground more that hundred mile per hours... Some bad hair day say tongue

From Wikipedia:
A hail stone of 1 centimetre (0.39 in) in diameter falls at a rate of 9 metres per second (20 mph), while stones the size of 8 centimetres (3.1 in) in diameter fall at a rate of 48 metres per second (110 mph)

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yes, I'm part of Skywarn here in the Twin Cities metro area.

Although I said this is "so cool", I keep forgetting about the damage and possible injuries this may cause. I hope not to offend anyone by my excitement.

I always try to chase on the south and west of the storm to stay safe, although the rear flank down-draft can be just as dangerous as the tornado itself.

I do agree that everyone should have a weather radio in the bedroom.

I have a feeling this might be a rough and tumble year again here in MN for strong storms.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Brink, do they still require a ham license? I looked into it back in 98 and it was required. Wouldn't mind do it though as I find it interesting. I tried for my license once, missed it by 2, never went back. Not sure how much the test has changed since 98. Even bought a yeasu vx-7 hoping it would prod me to get it. Might have to check into it again.

No ham license is needed. You can report via cell phone now.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I went storm chasing tonight with my wife and son.
At 8:15 PM tonight we chased the funnel from the 169 and 494 area all the way to hwy 7 and hwy 100. It was moving slow, about 15 mph.
It went right over Microcenter and then west and north of downtown mpls.
We forgot the good camera we left in such a hurry. Only had the cell phone camera.
The wall cloud had some awesome striation and rotation when it went over hwy 100. We stayed right on the edge of the big hail so no damage to the car.
So COOL!!!

Sorry to butt in but--my wife lost her truck in Texas a couple years ago the hail totaled the truck
