Bearcat -- haven't even taken time to try messing with the BIOS again. I got so far behind while I was sick that I'm still just putting out fires to try to catch up. As you said, with the return of cooler weather, the cores issue can take a back seat for a bit. I'll let you know how it goes. Glad to hear your feeling better. the flu is no fun. Got lucky this year and didn't get it but my other issues took it's place.

Thanks, Bearcat! I hope you're past that most recent setback in your healing.
----------------------------------------I just took a break from catch-up work and restarted my Zotac. Disabling HT in the BIOS "took" this time -- when it booted, /proc/cpuinfo said there were only 2 cores, BOINC messages said there were only 2 cores, and only 2 WUs started running. Even though we're back down to 60 degrees in my office thanks to a return of Feb. weather , I'm going to leave HT off for a while so as to do some fair timing comparisons with the AMD Fusion machine, which of course doesn't hyperthread.I'll wait until it gets warm again to turn off HT in my other warm machine. I am very happy that my machine that runs coolest is the AMD quadcore I built in Jan., which is also my best cruncher. Hopefully I won't have to throttle it back too much even in the middle of summer. Kate ![]() |

Your welcome. Seems I have a few good days, then a bad one. Having more good ones though.
----------------------------------------I will have to reduce cores on my harpertown rig when it gets to warm. Runs hot. The westmere system, being 32 nm, runs pretty cool in very warm days.

Some politics....
----------------------------------------Historical day here yesterday.. Biggest landslide record on votes before yesterday on history was +9%, yesterday nationalist party did increase their votes 15%, ending up having total 19% of all votes. So Finland political field has now divided three big equal size party, socialists, nationalists and conservative coalition. Next square is forming government, there is now way possibility to leave nationalist out of it and they will not aloud rescue packets to another EU countries and socialist block will support then on this matter... Theoretically Finland could use veto to put hold EU rescue packet down. Some interesting times here...... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/18/world/europe/18finland.html ![]() |

Some interesting times here...... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/18/world/europe/18finland.html That is a very interesting turn of events. Hopefully some sane heads will prevail, so as not to cause an international crisis. It brings to mind a quote from U.S. colonial times by Benjamin Franklin: "If we do not all hang together, we will all hang separately." He was saying they would be better off being united against a common foe, rather than all operating as separate entities, each doing their own thing. If any of the weak economies of Europe fall (default) they may cause a domino effect bringing down even the stronger economies. The stronger economies must impose some discipline on the weak to get them on an even keel once again. Speaking of which the U.S. must show the way to get its own house in order as we here are on an unsustainable path. We must control spending, control entitlements and raise revenue. Hopefully saner heads will agree here also. Cheers

Cheers One thing that escapes our bonehead leaders speeches about cutting spending is the amount of money spent on illegal immigration and how to enforce immigration. Joe, your right on. Good quote to reiterate. With the USA dropping in ratings today, hope this will spur the idiots at the helm to fix it now instead of borrowing more.

If any of the weak economies of Europe fall (default) they may cause a domino effect bringing down even the stronger economies. Franklin wasn't talking about economics with that quote, he was talking about fighting the British for independence. His "hanging" statement was meant quite literally! Anyway, none of these Euro-financial problems would cause a domino effect if they had all kept their own currencies rather than uniting on the Euro... The Founders had much to say about avoiding entangling alliances; something like "friends with all nations, allies with none". Over here in America, we have California about to dive off the insolvency cliff... I'm not too worried about that impacting other states. Neither are the citizens of California - they can just leave (and they have done in droves - check the latest Census results!)

Anyway, none of these Euro-financial problems would cause a domino effect if they had all kept their own currencies rather than uniting on the Euro... But please remember that EU is not federation. EU is confederation. So every nation is responsible them self as nation. And if you take a look at short history of Europe, this WWII biggest loser that was bombarded to ground level just few decades ago, is actually guite much paying hold EU budget (22,96%).. All those countries that are using â¬uro as excuse are actually net gainers from German, France and another countries that are funding EU. So please, it is not so simple. Of course you can use closed economy like modern China, and export unemployment by devaluation. It works, but also work as force compensation of private property. That is why is more profitable play online games on China than work on factory, first one simply will create bigger salary per hour... I do not know about you fellows, but I have live on closed economy and open one.... I really like open stuff more.... I really do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyfu_mU-dmo ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ultimaThule at Apr 19, 2011 3:58:36 PM] |
