So the low down on the bombed kb952709. Seems to be something related to SP1, was issued with the July'08 patches, pulled, reissued, now in auto-update and continuing to fail to install
----------------------------------------http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/18/upgr...930-with-kb952709-update/ Microsoft has silently upgrade Windows Vista (more specifically Windows Vista SP1) build version number from 6001.18000.080118-1840 to 6001.18063.080425-1930. The upgrade is done by the Update for Windows Vista KB952709 which was originally released on June 10, 2008, but almost immediately within days been taken off and retracted from Microsoft site. It’s unknown if the KB 952709 is an intended official release, or just a accidental leaked test build which never plan to make public. What makes KB952709 more mysterious is the sudden retraction of the availability of KB952709 downloads (original link for x86 and x64 (Google Cache)) from Microsoft Download Center and its related Knowledge Base Article number 952709 from Microsoft Support, with no reason given. Users who manage to download and install KB952709 update will see the following new build version number indicating 6001.18063 in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion registry key: BuildLab: 6001.vistasp1_gdr.080425-1930 BuildLabEx: 6001.18063.x86fre.vistasp1_gdr.080425-1930 Microsoft pages about KB952709, before been taken down, summarized that KB952709 is a reliability update which resolves some performance and reliability issues in Windows Vista. By applying KB952709 update, user can achieve better performance and responsiveness in various scenarios. The main attractiveness of the KB952709 is that it intends to fix long running Windows Vista issue - performance and sluggishness, similar to KB938979 update released prior to Service Pack 1. As the setup installation files has been taken off Microsoft Download Center, users who want to install KB952709 can download the unofficial hosted copies which manage to be downloaded by some users before Microsoft links are offline, using download links below. But note that as Microsoft has recalled the KB952709 release, so you take your own risk in downloading and installing the KB952709, although no users reported any problems after installing the update, nor the update actually helps to speed up Windows Vista significantly. I'm on SP1 alright, but seemingly not on the upgraded version: 6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840 6001.18000.x86fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840 Anyone else made it to 1930?

I had no problems with this update (at 1:45 am) other than it booting me off my quad on the LAN while I played Guild Wars. I had to reconnect a couple times...
----------------------------------------Where do I find the version of SP1 on the dual core to see which I have? Thanks! ![]() |

The General level you can see in the System Control panel, but for the detail level you need to open RegEdit and navigate to the key in the path of the article above:

Scribe also reports KB951748 is breaking internet access for various Firewalls. The link says that ZA is effected and switching to Norton (where's my hammer and wooden stick, personal opinion), did allow for firewalled network access. Did not notice anything with the Sunbelt Kerio PF, so pointing fingers at the "who done it" is not all that clear. Thanks for posting this Scribe; fixed this very quickly when it happened at work today on a laptop. |

Thanks for posting this Scribe; fixed this very quickly when it happened at work today on a laptop. This fix was in fact a coordinated effort to patch the 16 main internet DNS servers on multiple OSses, not only windows, to stop a DNS poisoning hole and ZA being one of few caught with their pants down. Diana, good, you're on the latest greatest then having iteration 1930. Found so far only one discussion on it failing with this July's patch and it being described as a mini SP, hence the version number change. http://www.msfn.org/board/Vlited-Vista-won-t-install-KB952709-upda-t120326.html

Having just upgraded the chip on my Vista X64 Ultimate from an X2 3800 to an X2 6000, and successfully updated the Nvidia graphics driver, I was feeling lucky.
----------------------------------------Checked windows update, had 16 important + 3 recommended, a mixture of Vista and other stuff (Office 2003 etc.). All worked perfectly. XP next. Edit - XP Pro 32 bit (3 Machines) 9 XP + 8 Office - Done. Pete. ![]() "Patience is a virtue", I can't wait to learn it! [Edit 1 times, last edit by petehardy at Aug 13, 2008 3:20:49 PM] |
