Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

JP, the 10 de Febrero was last week Wednesday, and I absolutely detest the expression, but given what you're saying is Spanish to me, never mind.

Now, I'm taking time out and watch "The Beagle", a Dutch / English co-production with Sarah Darwin on board, retracing the steps of her great grand father, Charles Darwin, seeking an answer to 1 question: "what's the state of our planet today". Today, part 20. "The Galapagos ARE doomed!"

Did the Windows Update and restart yetserday 18th, on all my W7 machines but the package was small this time, only 7 updates.
That one was fast. Hope this will hold for a week at least biggrin .

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

We should maybe create the:
"International Crunching Machines Cleaning Day"

As you can imagine in Switzerland cleanliness is a must. So I have near to my planets a powerful vacuum cleaner (to clean the space of all these wandering nano-asteroïds) and a compressed air bottle. I hate having dust on my filters and inside the casing on the fans, boards etc...

Dust has one very simple effect, it will reduce the cooling capacity of the whole device. Heat will slowly build up and if you do not take care the CPU will overheat.

In my life I have seen PC's that have run in dusty and smokers environments for a few years where the whole machine was not cleanable any more. For an office machine it is a sorry state but once dead you can only throw it away.
But for a cruncher machine, where CPU's are overclocked, lot's of fans everywhere, that means high volume of air pumped in and out it is important to keep the whole thing dust free. Washable filters in front of the fans if possible and clean often.

To avoid a lot of work you must clean often. I suggest the last WE of each month should be a thorough cleaning day. Do it even if the machine seems clean. It is not. Dust accretion is a phenomena that when you see it it is already pretty advanced.

And last but not least, what is dust? Inside a house that is not in a polluted environment coming from the outside, the dust is composed at a very high percentage by particles from our skin. Imagine that we switch the whole skin body surface in about two weeks. So if you are 5 living in a house that is a pretty large quantity of skin dust potentially available. But you clean your house anyway so you reduce the impact to our beloved little crunching machines.

Crunch, Crunch, Crunch, Clean, Clean, Clean

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

Yesterday had a 6 update pack for W7 with reboot.
How to optimize the operation on all devices to loose minimum time.
Anyway all in all it took me about half an hour in total or 3 minutes per device.

I have the devices programmed so that they download updates but cannot install and reboot by themselves. This is to avoid any trouble and have devices blocked or stopped for long periods as I cannot be by them every day.

What, you've not got [free] LogMeIn running for that 256 bit encrypted remote access from anywhere in the world?
