Also ran into the problem of Win7 Ultimate-64 not updating. It would start and just stay at 0% download for hours without any apparent progress. The process svchost would also use a full 25% (1 core on a 4 core system). The windows update service was the part which was causing svchost to run wild. After searching the Microsoft update forums and a bunch of twiddling it still did not seem to do the updates. One of the suggestions was to just let it run and it would eventually work. So, everything else was shut down and it was left to run overnight. It did eventually work because in the morning, as if by magic, the updates had been downloaded and installed. Rebooted and all seems OK at this point. At this time I am still unsure as to why it eventually worked. This only affected the Win 7 machine, not the Vista machine.

FWIW and IMHO updating DC machines running Windows is not necessary. 99%+ of the updates are not going to improve anything for casual or DC users and can cause unneeded headaches. It can also lead to the dreaded backdoor installation of Win 10. In the years since Win 7 came out I have had updates on all the DC machines that used to run it disabled without a single problem. ( switched all DC machines to linux 2 months ago) Again this is JMHO.

The win 7 machine is just one of 2 crunchers on Windows. All of the rest (crunching exclusive) are on Linux. The Win 7 machine is the basic all purpose machine which is used for a variety of purposes. If it were a dedicated cruncher only machine, I would dispense with the updates. The "upgrade" to Win 10 was disabled long ago.
