Strugling for over a week to get my desktop station to work again, now back on IE6 SP2 level, still no apps installed, no wireless, and asking for the next batch of MS critical patches, this error showed up:
----------------------------------------[Numero errore: 0x80072F8F] La data e l'ora del computer in uso non sono sincronizzate rispetto a un certificato di aggiornamento. Per risolvere il problema: 1. Dal Pannello di controllo, scegliere Data e ora. 2. Assicurarsi che la data e l'ora siano corrette. Freely translated it says: Your system time and date isnot in sync with the an update cerrtificate. Visit control panel and correct. The funny part is, the BIOS has the right time and Woz is allowed to sync time with the internet. Visit my favorite oogle and the expert website (updateexp ) has this to say: What causes Error 0x80072f8f # The date / time on your computer is too different from the date / time of the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates used by the Windows Update site.. Go figure (read that redmond had troubles validating software atm, and indeed experienced this several times in last 72 hours)

No worries.... knew it was something in the August updates and pinpointed it to being a *where have we seen this before* race condition of the Woz inbuilt firewall and the Redmond certified and approved 3rd party antivir. Even if the Woz-firewall is switched off it still does funny things and even when authorized i had to add manual exemptions too.... now i can at least see the internet icon again in the systray.... just that fix was a 3 page instruction from the expert site in step 9 failing to execute because....
----------------------------------------Now that i know the order to avoid the conflict, looking for a util that can control the sequence in which services are being started. One blocked or absent service makes all dependencies fall over too and the Redmondian house of cards falling over. No IE7 and Belarc now giving the system an 2.5 on a scale of 10. Yes *out of the box* Woz is by default very safe.

So here I'm sitting reading a foreign IT news website and with once again the formerly hidden and obfuscated truth trickling to the surface, the article cites exactly the phenomena experienced since my main desktop went wonky somewhere in July and gotten worse in August. The stealthy Windows Updates to the Windows Update broke things which made re installation of patches and functioning of the restore function an event of the haunting fields. Install IE7 on a clean WinXP and later on it offers to install the IE6 cumulative patch.... histerical these people of Redmond.... To take their latest priceless add: The Wow Was Never Now.
----------------------------------------Hold onto your hat-rims as October patch date may be a roller coaster installing those un-installable patches after another update to Windows Update, without your approval of course. ![]()

Personally I have chosen "Download updates automatically and warn when they are ready to install". Then I install only when I want and with the option "review the list of updates to install" which gives me the opportunity to unselect some of them.
----------------------------------------That does not make me feel 100 % safe at all, but at least that leaves me a possibility to wait for possible reactions and to stop something which would be reported as potentially disastrous. Cheers. Jean. |

Nice to wake up to a (grrr) rebooted machine. No crunching for awhile (grrr) I was sure I set the updates to let me choose when to install them. I see I have a few other updates as well to download at my own convenience this time LoL

Yep, know the feeling Diana, if no-one answers, Bill thinks it's okay to boot anyway. There's been lots of hot discussion on that in the bloggosphere.
----------------------------------------If you like, can compose an instruction how to set up. A. In 'Service' which when will always run if not there to log in after auto-boot (uninstall BOINC and re-install ticking the 'Service' box). From BOINC. 6.0 graphics will be available in that mode also. All work in progress is retained doing this. or B. Let it auto-log and return to sign-in screen so the Autostarts can load and still having the graphics access. My Old Desktop has this and it's unstoppable as far as prowlers is concerned. Uses a Microsoft Auto-Login utility with encrypted password. or C. Truly disable Auto-Update leaving it to the user to run and apply. Done that on the Laptop with a little shortcut that disables Bill's WAU at each boot-up killing a few services that call Redmond every few hours. The A. option has my recommendation as safest with absolute maximum crunching performance.
