Sek I have to say that my boxes are running more smoothly than they have for a while maybe even with my firewall spyware and virus catchers Microsoft's own Malicious Software Removal Tool may have removed one or two unfortunate nasties (probably of their own creation)
----------------------------------------Still no way yet to crowbar on the SP2 onto Win2K3. These threads of ours soon roll off page one these days which is cool - the new bunch from UD are way more chatty than the very silent WCG old timers Unless it's you or me - LOL. Dave ![]() |

The one update i disable each month is that very MSRT. Has caused me serious trouble on several occasions. Rely on real security software from specialists and not 'an item' in a catalogue of 1000 products.

We are the Gates's....resistance is futile ![]() LOL, I don't think that the Borg is ready to hear that I have started converting the P3's to Linux... until forced by hardware failures to upgrade & suffer the slings & arrows of that new Alpha release of MS's latest OS, these P4's will run XP and I see no Vista on the horizon... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

A new day of joy for Redmond....
----------------------------------------Windows Update Downloader Can Spread Malware Time: 00:14 EST/05:14 GMT | News Source: Betanews | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum Researchers at Symantec have published a report highlighting how the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) -- a main component of Windows Update -- is being used by Trojans to download malware that bypasses firewalls and security controls. BITS runs in the background and downloads patches to Windows without eating up all available bandwidth. Because it supports the HTTP protocol, it can be used to download almost any file, and Microsoft employs the technology for sending beta versions of its software such as Vista and Windows Server to testers.

A new day of joy for Redmond.... It is a way for a trojan to download more malware through a firewall, but it can't be used to infect a computer from outside the firewall. |

It's here again and remains to come back like earth keeps spinning around the sun.
----------------------------------------Microsoft to release four critical patches ne...i on 07 June 2007 - 23:30 Microsoft has announced plans to issue four "critical" security bulletins next week that address vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Windows Mail in Vista. "Critical" is the most severe ranking Microsoft assigns to security flaws, which typically indicates a system can be compromised remotely with little interaction required by the user. Specifically, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003, IE 5.01 running on Windows 2000 with SP4 and Windows Mail in Vista are among the affected software. There are six bulletins in total according to Microsoft's advance advisory notification, all of which will be released next Tuesday as part of Microsoft’s monthly “Patch Tuesday” ritual. And only download from a trusted site and not from any emailed link!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So one patch failed to install on two, but not the main desktop and searching for an answer why my mouse refused to action anything on clicking, yet on hovering indicating it had identified the buttons, found this:
----------------------------------------Developers: Microsoft .NET Patch May Make PCs Go "Haywire" yuna49 writes "Various people are reporting that the MS07-040 patch for .NET released on Tuesday can cause a variety of seemingly unrelated problems . According to the SANS Internet Storm Center 'the reports we got so far seem not to lead to any specific thing that happens in many cases, just various things going haywire.' Some commentators on The Register's report of this story indicate that the patch failed to install at all , while others report things like the mouse suddenly failing to work or long periods of hard drive thrashing. In some cases a hard reboot seems to fix the problem, but other reports suggest that a re-installation of the .NET framework itself is required. The problems may be related to the MSCORSVW.EXE process which recompiles all the .NET assemblies when the patch is downloaded. While the recompilations are supposed to run as a background task, in some instances the recompilation will drive the processor to 100% usage." Last symptom seen all morning and this afternoon since reboot: The Antivir popping up a window asking for permission to rename one or the other file of .net to be renamed while it re-compiles.... what fun.
