Re: Where to hang out for 2 month downtime

"In the evening SiDock and RakeSearch were on for a while to allow upload/download new tasks. Now they are off because backup data is still copying. They should start working today, I hope this time definitely."

hope this helps

Re: Where to hang out for 2 month downtime

Thanks all - this has been a useful thread for me. My personal plan is to give Folding@Home a try: I'm going to follow Dayle Diamond's advice and take my GPUs to hit some Alzheimer's research until WCG is back.

See you all on the other side :-)

Re: Where to hang out for 2 month downtime

I was open to running VirtualBox tasks on LHC@home (or Rosetta), but I discovered that I couldn't run as many tasks due to hypervisor overhead not leaving enough idle threads for the host to be responsive. Further, trying to run my own programs that used to run fine with the same number of free threads under WCG did not work out because only the VirtualBox wrapper was low priority and the VMs couldn't be deprioritized by the host (I didn't even see them show up in Task Manager other than the increase in memory usage overall).

So I am trying SiDock for my Windows machine, now that it is no longer down as described previously in the thread. Folding@home would require separate software and tweaking which I don't want to commit to just yet. I agree that it's one of the few projects that can absorb our processing power. My Android devices are running Einstein but I'd prefer them to do Universe since the Einstein tasks have a more-efficient GPU option. But Universe had recent maintenance yet is failing to send out work units properly...

Looking at and dealing with other BOINC projects makes me appreciate how good I've had it with WCG as many are dead, obscure, lack compatibility with my devices, or have no work to offer. I can't wait for WCG to be back again.

Re: Where to hang out for 2 month downtime

Yesterday I still had 8 days worth of CPU time spent on WCG, all on resends, but today I have nothing.

My sole GPU is running Einstein@home and MilkyWay@home and occasionally a WU from GPUGrid, but I have to find something for my CPUs to do.

I used to run Rosetta but I turned it on (allow new tasks) and it complained about not having VirtualBox installed. So... maybe I will let my CPUs work on Einstein, too? Or maybe I'll join Universe@home? Or maybe I'll let my CPUs rest for a couple of months. I haven't made up my mind.

Re: Where to hang out for 2 month downtime

Argh... Trying to find a European project - possibly to do with medicine or health or clilmate. Found the gene@home whiched looked very promising but they won't accept new accounts.
http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/genehome/en/hf/index.php

Any other suggestions? I've run out of WCG WU's.

Might have to revert to Folding@Home...

join TN-Grid
You need the invitation code: science@tn

http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/

But I think they don't have enough Workunits for everyone

Re: Where to hang out for 2 month downtime

I did both SiDock and TN-Grid since the downtime but you need to create an account first... manually. Yes what a PIA. Does NOT work via Boinc Manager. Then via Boinc Manager you can log in to join the project. Both need an invitation code which is on their front page.

Even Rosetta (non Vbox) is still supplying WUs. Ignore the warning. 4.20 WUs still come in. I could comment on the Vbox thing but this is not the place and their forums seem old. Yes I know, fora is the plural of forum but I reject the Latin which died over 1000 years ago.

With these 3, all my machines are happy.

But I think they don't have enough Workunits for everyone
For now for me there is enough but maybe not if many people join. Don't believe their stats page. It jumped from 0 WUs available to some number numerous times since the time I joined.

Maybe for TN-Grid, but SiDock explicitly states that the invitation code is not required if you are registering through BOINC Manager on their home page. Can't really test it now myself as I wanted the credentials saved to my password manager and I like to tweak all the settings before connecting any computers.

Yes, I know.
It's not true. And the TNGrid stats there is 0 WUs and I still get them. I did the manual sign in to SiDock first and connected to their site (and saved the password). The preferences are what is common to all Boinc related projects or so it looked like to me. I did no tweaking. It's only for 2 months or less. Let the projects fight it out.

TN-Grid is keeping my 7 machines busy for now at least. They are accepting new accounts, you just need to use the invitation code on their main page.
