I am running 1 7970 and a 2600k CPU and 16gb of 1866mhz DDR3 RAM nothing is OC at all, just turbo on my CPU and my average elapsed times per project is 1:20. And that's just using 1 thread for my CPU
I am getting a 2nd 7970 tomorrow, is there anything that I have to change in BOINC manager to make them both work? Do I crossfire them or just install both of them separately? |

You know you can run 8 GPU "ONLY" on one card, right? You pretty much need one thread per GPU wu, but others have made changes to get 2 to work. You only have 8 threads and your card is strong enough to do 8, if you choose to do so. No sense spending cash on another card if you don't need to. Also, HCC GPU ends in around 100 days with no other GPU project in the pipeline. Food for thought. As far as running 2, I think I read not to crossfire them but not 100% sure.

Here some analysis for the GTX 680 Nvidia GPU, with a 980X CPU 12 threads. All is with stock frequencies, no overclocking.
----------------------------------------Numbers are average on large quantities so that statistics are meaningful. CPU and GPU are HCC only. Running 12 threads CPU only produces 200 WU / day. Running (1 GPU + 1CPU) thread and 11 CPU threads leads to 501 WU / day Running (10 GPU + 10 CPU) thread and 2 CPU threads leads to 557/day We see here that there is a 10 percent gain from one GPU thread to 10. This is really not much. The GTX 680 does not scale well at all. Next I will come for the GTX 580 and then the HD 7970. ![]() |

Ty Hyper, very informative breakdown.
I have heard that with NV upper end 5XX and 6XX 2 GPU per is the sweeter spot and almost doubles the 1 per output. Have you tried that? It would also avail more CPU cores to CPU only projects.... If you can get that to work. As it seems you have. Just food for thought. |

Some additional stats for HD 7970 card with 7.05 HCC WU's:
----------------------------------------Running 12 threads CPU only produces 230 WU / day. The reason is higher compared to my post above is that this machine has an overcloked CPU. GPU stays stock. Running (1 GPU + 1CPU) thread and 11 CPU threads leads to 1'005 WU / day Running (10 GPU + 10 CPU) thread and 2 CPU threads leads to 3'083 WU /day We see here that there is a 300% percent gain from one GPU thread to 10. This is exceptional. The HD 7970 scales incredibly well. A biprocessor machine with 4 ATI boards would be a supernova spitting 12'000 WU per day or nearly 2.5 Million WCG points per day. I wonder that stoneageman must have one of these machines ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Nov 10, 2012 2:34:54 PM] |

With 2 GPU on the GTX 680 and 10 CPU threads the daily WU creep up to 616 instead of 550. Over 10% improvement. The GTX 580 behaves similarely except that the num bers are higher, this due to the different architecture between the 680 and 580. I must say that for a company like Nvidia that targets supercomputers, parallel computing etc. it is an extreme disappointment for their performance in WCG. We are not talking small change here. The top ATI board is 6 times (600%) more powerful than the top Nvidia board. Cm'on Nvidia wake up!!!!! ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Nov 10, 2012 2:54:04 PM] |

Its because AMD made general computing a priority in their cards...its called GCN architecture (graphics core next)
----------------------------------------Nvidia dumbed down their consumer cards so they could charge more for their Tesla cards, which are made for general CUDA and Open CL computing. They shot themselves in the foot IMO Edit: thanks mmstick, fixed it. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ryan222h at Nov 10, 2012 4:33:50 PM] |

GCN means Graphics Core Next, but yes, GPGPU computing is the primary focus of GCN. Their long term goal is HSA after all.

On my 7970, usage never goes above 68% and WU setup/teardown periods are really long, 2 to 4 minutes of nothing for 1 min of crunching, anybody else notice that ?
----------------------------------------Exact ref is Asus Matrix HD 7970 Platinum. Edit: I should add that the same was happening with 2x HD 5850 but I wasn't really concerned since they were each taking 4 minutes per WU when the 7970 takes a minute or less, it now feels like a waste of seconds ^^.
