Unable to Get Device Profile to Take Effect [Resolved]

I have changed the Profile for 4 devices over the last 2 hours and attempted to have the device pickup the change without success.

In "MY GRID"->"Device Manager" I selected the device, changed the profile from "work" and "home" to "school" and clicked the "Save" control. I then went back to "Device Manager" and verified the selection had been registered.

I opened the BOINC Manager on the device that was changed ("Advanced View - Accesible View"), clicked the "Projects" tab then the "Update" control. Message log showed:
2/11/2010 10:42:36 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
2/11/2010 10:42:41 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
Note: Nothing logged showing a change of profile.

I then shutdown the BOINC Manager and restarted. The message log shows:

I have also used the "Advanced->Preferences" option to "clear" followed by "Projects"->"Update" all with the same result, the device does not pick up the profile change.

I have done this with devices running Win XP, Vista and 7. as well as changed the profile from both "work" and "home" to "school". The above logs are representative of each device/profile/version.

I am only using the WCG provided profiles, Default, Home, School & Work using BOINC version 6.2.28 as distributed on the WCG site. The only change was to install eFMer BOINCTasks and update/add the required gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg to the devices to be controled.

Any thought/ideas on what I have to do to change a device profile?

Re: Unable to Get Device Profile to Take Effect

Same issue here.
I tried to change my work profile by unselecting HCC. 20 minutes later the device still downloaded HCC. Option "send me work from another project" is not selected. And yes, I pushed the Save-Button wink.

Re: Unable to Get Device Profile to Take Effect

What you did is right. This is what I do and it has allways worked without problems.
Now after having changed and saved you went back to the Device manager and could confirm that the profile was indeed changed.
The only explanation I see here is that fow whatever reason the servers have not published the change at least during the two hours you were trying. When your boinc manager was accessing the server the old profile was still published. Maybe servers are down, unaccessible, doing stats and many other things. Try again in a few hours and let see if the problem is there, but before updating check again in the Device Manager to be sure that the new profile is displayed.

Re: Unable to Get Device Profile to Take Effect

Think profile changes had a client transfer issue some time ago as did the changing of project selections not taking effect.

Techs notified

Edit: Done, but it will be earliest 14:00 UTC before the arrivals to the office.

Most know this: Except for the mouse activity and project selection/profile changes, all other alterations are possible through the BOINC preferences screen, and quite quickly for multiple devices via the mentioned BOINCTasks. There's a but: Once you have used local prefs, their override remains in effect until you clear them, even when the website device profile changes have transferred.

Edit2: sad Could change project either... save, but not passing info to the hopper.

Same for me.....Unfortunately my fastest machine is now running dry. I had the profile temporarily optimized to receive Beta work. Beta pool seems to be empty now and I am unable to change back to normal work. crying

Hope this is fixed soon.

Re: Unable to Get Device Profile to Take Effect

Not sure how that can happen, Giba. The selected projects were saved, but am still getting work as per the old selection, the last inbound for HFCC being 11:57 today and several of HCMD2 at 12:37. Saw nelsoc reading this thread, thus guess he's heads down searching for the cause and what switch to flick.

Re: Unable to Get Device Profile to Take Effect

Appear that all Beta crunchers jumped for the "Wise Beta fishing mode" for sometime since started last Betas... biggrin

Probably not, but maybe it was the root cause for this problem... many people frequently asking for WU's without valid projects attached...just intermitents and Beta... laughing

Out of topic:

P.S.: Just a teaser. It is Carnaval (Carnival) time in Brazil, and for guys that would like to enjoy hapiness, parties, festivals, dances, samba, pagode, warm weather, summer, sun a lot, beatyful girls and boys, a lot of very happy pepople living and playing in a good way, with a great smiles, and so on related with this magnific Holiday, I recommend pick a fly and came to Brazil to enjoy it with us ! (to Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Recife, and any other great and wonderful cities that we have here !).

You are welcome ! cool coffee
