I have just started reading this thread and it all looks very interesting especially when the claim is made that global warming is due more to fluctuations of Earth's orbit about the sun and the wobbling of its axis. Is this really what results in an ice age or in the warming which will cause the polar ice caps to melt to a significant degree? When this happens sufficiently, what happens to many islands and to the coastlines?

dkt the Polar Ice Caps are not disappearing so I shouldn't worry about the disappearing coastlines
----------------------------------------Have a look here http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/en/home/seaice_extent.htm and here http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/ as for the reducing output of the Sun take a look here http://lasp.colorado.edu/sorce/data/tsi_data.htm - this is down to the Sunspot Cycle which has left us with 266 Sunspotless days in 2008 and 260 in 2009. This is an exceptional low not seen since 1911. Throughout the 20th Century the trend was upwards for Sunspot Numbers and consequently Solar Activity (resulting in a warming planet) There is a huge lag built into our wonderful World in the 4/5ths that is the Ocean with hhuuggeee specific heat capacity (it's why those Hot Water Bottles stay warm so long at the foot of your bed) The current solar low is why we are seeing headlines like this http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/weather/bri...n-100-years-14622499.html and this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12403...oping-Arctic-weather.html Man Made Global Warming caused by the 0.0387% of the atmosphere that is now CO2 is simply an out and out lie My 15 year old niece wrote on her Facebook yesterday "never felt so much pain in my feet from the cold, in my life! x" That would be true Wrap up warm folks Dave ![]() |

Walking home from the Supermarket after buying stocks to get me through the next bout of Snowfall about to descend on me (Reusable Bags, environmentally friendly washing powder and eggs from free range hens that are fed organic feed and patted on the head everyday - just waiting for the birth certificates of the hens that laid the egg to be included in the box...but I digress) I get a call from my very excited 18 year old who has just passed her driving test "Dad, Dad can you put me on the insurance?"
----------------------------------------and I was minded of this I has seen earlier in the day http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/ethicalman/2009/12...al_climate_criminals.html Currently titled "Are our children to blame?" but I'm sure from the URL you can see what it's originally intended title was "Are our children the real climate criminals?" On the BBC Website !! Which in the name of Climate Change (formerly Man Made Global Warming) goes on to espouse the idea that any new Human life is a disaster This is where 0.0387% of the atmosphere that is CO2 has been extrapolated to.... I pray that every Human life is treasured as the gift to us all that it represents and I pray that the World Community Grid can and will find greater yielding crops as in the Nutritious Rice for the World Project and enable renewable energy supplies to be more efficient as in the Clean Energy Project and reduce the suffering and prolong the lives of those afflicted by Cancers, HIV/AIDs, Malaria, Hepatitis, Dengue Fever and Muscular Dystrophy through their specific projects and find new insight into the causes of disease and enable new cures and treatments through the Human Proteome Folding and Genome Comparison research projects. This we can only achieve through progress Going back into the Dark Ages is not the way forward. I'd best go get my debit card out again and take a visit to Confused.com. Congrats Em's drive safely Dave (Dad) ![]() |

I found this comment on one of the links and I liked the attitude:
----------------------------------------"The Vikings called Greenland as such because the southern coastal areas were GREEN and temperate during the Medieval Warm Period for a period of 300 years - from AD 1000 to around 1300. Archaeologists have found many large settlements along the southern coasts complete with granaries and the remains of sheep, cows and goats. The agriculture was rich enough to allow the Vikings to export food back to Scandinavia in exchange for things they needed like iron utensils, timber and fabrics. The evidence is clear: southern Greenland was rather like Scotland is today for several centuries; then the ice re-advanced during the Little Ice Age which began around 1400 and lasted until the late 19th Century (1880s). That is why Dickens's novels are fill of snow-filled streets; Peter Bruegel paintings of Hunters in the Snow are so common and Europe was struck by famine, disease and plague from 1400 until the modern era. The current 'warming' is a rebound to the normal temps." |

Hi damir1978
----------------------------------------Having looked into this for a long while the only truth in whether it is getting colder or warmer depends entirely on when you begin looking We have had thermometers since 1724 The little ice age minima (caused by an inactive Sun) occured around 1600 This was Holland last January ![]() Just a nod to Peter Bruegel ![]() Dave ![]() |

On a bright note Eso
----------------------------------------The NH Winter doesn't really get started until February LOL We have all had to "endure" the Hottest Decade ever recorded. Incidentally accurate reproducible temperatre measurement in Australia on a monthly basis began in 1951 So that's the hottest decade in the last 6 which is nowhere near as scary as the Hottest Decade Ever Just to wrap it in a little context ![]() Dave ![]() |
