Hey guys and gals, fellow crunchers,
The latest news is encouraging. But our problem is - we NEED more members!! There are only 240K devices crunching, and not all are crunching FA@H. As somebody had already mentioned, imagine if we had the SETI@HOME's power! So, I wanted to open this new thread for us to brainstorm and share ideas as to how to recruit more people. How about posting to SETI forums to recruit some of them? Advertisement? Maybe we should do some fund-raising and post ads in our areas? What do you think? |

Hey guys and gals, fellow crunchers Hello The latest news is encouraging. But our problem is - we NEED more members!! I don't want to sound disgruntled, and I will anyway, but you are preaching to the choir, Mac. Every person that frequents this forum knows that this project could use an increased amount of members, but they are the ones already participating, we need to get the word out to those that don't know. There are only 240K devices crunching, and not all are crunching FA@H. As somebody had already mentioned, imagine if we had the SETI@HOME's power! Achieving the same amount or more computer power than SETI has is a bit optimistic, considering that they've had a 5+ year head start on us. Those that are willing and able to gather, monitor, and maintain such resources have mostly already been vaccumed up by said project. So, I wanted to open this new thread for us to brainstorm and share ideas as to how to recruit more people. How about posting to SETI forums to recruit some of them? Recruiting on the forums of other projects is considered poor taste, something I wouldn't want to tarnish our community with. Advertisement? Apparently IBM does/did limited TV advertisements for WCG, but focus mainly on more formal areas like journals and such. (Thanks Didactylos) Maybe we should do some fund-raising and post ads in our areas? If you can find the people willing to go through the ordeal of setting up such events, sure. IBM have, at various points, run TV, print and web ad campaigns for WCG. Obviously, there's more exposure possible.
There are a couple of threads in the archives somewhere from when we discussed these issues previously. |

I should perhaps be more clear: these have been fairly limited campaigns, limited in the sense of targeting only a particular group of journals / newspapers, or limited to a specific country. I think the only TV ad campaign was US only, but I could be wrong.
The most recent campaign was print and web, focussing on the financial sector. Previous threads: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7094 -- I'm sure there's more, but it's a bit scattered. |

Recruit poeple from SETI forum, or another BOINC project doesn't seem that can be very successful. Many of this poeple can be deterred from participating here because WCG (and FAAH) site doesn't look as standart BOINC site (such as SETI, Einstein or Rosetta does) and it is quite complicated for novices take bearings here.

Seems such a waste of processing looking for aliens, when all those people could be doing something a bit more worthwhile closer to home...

Hello cio_redulla,
There has been no announcement, but my BOINC computer was unable to contact the server for 2 hours. I successfully reached the server just about the time you posted your message. As far as I know it is working now. Lawrence |

we could almost duble the work units over nite,
if they would mutitread the wcg agent, since many memebers have dual and more recently quad core cpus alredy. :) Yah and THOSE WHO WASTE CPU CYCLES ON SETI@HOME, SHOULD CHEK THIS LINK OUT. http://www.cutepiggy.com/full_disclosure_project.html |
