Re: We need more members!!

For me there are two inhibitors to further use WCG.

1) The screen saver of SETI at Home is much nicer than the crappy FAAH. I can not stand to see the FAAH one anymore. Now with the introduction of other projects, I think WCG is more interessting as I get on my PC now different screen savers but they are all apart from Fight against Cancer very boaring and bring me nearly to the point to change to BOINC and SETI

2) WCG was not supported under Linux. My 4 Servers are therefore running BOINC and with that SETI and other projects as well which reduces the FAAH computing time.

Whatever I run and like on my Laptop.... I will also run on the servers.. so.. make the screen savers more interessting to look at.

There's been some hot discussion over search for aliens versus searching for cures in the here and now..... WCG on BOiNC has graphics for all its projects..... u look at them 5 minutes, u research the meaning if interested, then switch it off, as it eats CPU time....no (moving) screensaver for me. Sure we like them glossy, but still they bore after a while.... it's on the list though and they are getting better.

Now, think, who do u know who's got AIDS, Cancer, Alzheimer, Multiple Scleroses, Parkinson, Muscle Dystrophy? Who do U like to help first?

Re: We need more members!!

Just my two cents. S.E.T.I@home is a great idea. Even if they never find Extraterrestrials it is a great experiment and proof of concept in mass cooperation.

This is for those who are really interested in how we will find E.T and another suitable life sustaining planet for us. Life as we know it requires liquid water. Planets with liquid water that can sustain life would probably be found in the "habitable zone" from the sun. Venus, Earth and Mars are within this zone..the Earth for sure.

A planet with liquid water would likely be close to the sun and blue. A detailed visible spectral analysis of star light could in theory find the very weak blue water based spectral reflection off the planet. The indirectly detected planet would probably have volcanism and a magnetic field if liquid water exists. This is likely everything needed for life.

We are currently 10 years away from having a space based spectral analysis telescope if at all. Finding E.T is still a long shot in the dark.

I support humanitarian research in the meantime.

The search for a little blue "miracle planet" or a G.E.M in a vast empty void is a timeless sought after search in the grand scheme of things. Yet we might be more special then we ever hoped.

Optical infrared and visible spectrum analysis might provide the first glimmers of hope in the vast search. Maybe, they also have viruses, bacteria and illnesses to cure? Maybe, cancer and viruses is universal? Opportunistic diseases.

Re: We need more members!!

Hmm, I think you missed the point I was making. The question of this Thread is how we will get more members to run WCG and in addition to keep the ones we have as happy as we can to let them crunch more.

I wouldn´t post here if I am not running WCG... then I would post in SETI and wouldn´t even know that this forum exist.

And again.. my point is that everyone that sees first and here and there again a nice screensaver on his laptop will also run other computers on it. This person will also convince others to use it.

SETI is so successfull because of the topic. Everyone has seen starship enterprise and is interessted in space... so why not seach for aliens.

WCG is different. We already think supporting cures for Cancer, AIDS, etc is the right thing to do. But not the others we want to bring on board.

WCG needs more than just the slogan AIDS, Cancer to kick off a hype.

For me that is a cool screensaver that changes here and there or has built in changes based on the data...

Re: We need more members!!

I agree with you that the concept behind SETI is an interesting one, SETI is NOT about finding habitable planets, merely "listening" for artificial signals in space. For finding habitable planets you should look at the future Boinc project PlanetQuest, which is about detecting exoplanets, but probably not of the size of Earth.
As far as I know, Venus is NOT in the habitable zone of our star, as all it's water has disappeared because of being too close to the Sun. Also, it is impossible to detect water because of it's color by spectral data, what you can detect is water molecules in the atmosphere, along with whatever else the atmosphere might be made up of.

Sorry if this topic has drifted too far, I'll get back to watching my PC crunch WCG blushing

Re: We need more members!!

I held an event at my university in conjunction with an organization that focuses on social responsibility. I was able to get nine more people to join the team. Great point that whoever is reading this most likely has already joined World Community Grid.

Do you think support groups for people with certain ailments such as cancer would be responsive? How about forums on sites like WebMD? Most people go to the web when they have medical questions before they go to their own doctor, and these are people that are concerned about finding solutions.

People
We have to tell about FiA@Home to the company owners, managers and majors. The companies has a lot of computers that are bad-used. So think in this Idea.
see you

Re: We need more members!! (company members!)

Stand in a mainstreet near you and hand out sheats with WCGs url on it.

Put up WCGs url on billboards all over town. With a fancy headline or something.

Hang a banner over a bridge over the freeway. (highway)

Paint it as grafitti.

Print the url on a t-shirt and wear it or get a tattoo somewhere.

Put it on your card.

Shout it out loudly on the subway and the bus.

Write the url on your car, house, kids, dog, cat, etc

You should be able to make a couple more people join that way. cool

Re: We need more members!! (company members!)

I have worked in the financial services industry in NYC for 6 years and I have tried to get the companies I worked for to join this type of project. The problem you run into is that they feel it is a security issue. The reality is that there is minimal security risk according to my colleagues in IT. But to get a large corporation to devote a team of professionals to bringing such a project online and maintain it is impossible. It's a hard sell to a business of client servicing that is very dependant on technology for critical day-to-day function.

There is enough computing power in NYC alone to run an entire project faster than any of the current ones running now. The only way this can happen is for someone at the top to be approached and convinced that it would be a noninvasive, low-risk, cheap and tax deductible project that could be very beneficial and kept low-profile. We need to be better at networking in order to bring high-profile corporate individuals into the loop. Success in this realm would mean petaflop performance for all distributed computing projects.

Re: We need more members!! (company members!)

If i lived in NY I would do an upgrade in the project computer power.
But I lived in south Brasil, and I put 6 computers working, but just 2 computers are Pentium 4 with more 256 Mb RAM to run the project sad
the others are 4 Pentium 3, and they dont run.
I am using orkut to try spread the grid, and I got 10 more users!
I send an e-mail to the radio station and they accepted to join in the grid and do a public call in "the air".

Friend, you are from the "apple" NY, so, keep working hard to spread our grid please!

There is a lot of good people, like you, in the world. God bless you.
keep in touch
wilson

PS. sorry by my low level of english
