Dear GWG, It is not really a matter of "knocking SETI@HOME". But we need to think of priorities. What is more important for us - finding a cure for AIDS or getting a message from the aliens? Maybe we should straighten things in our home before we look out the balcony into the open skies, no? If we can get some of the SETI computing power, we can speed up our search for cure to halt the AIDS epidemic. And then, we can keep looking for a message from our "brothers and sisters" from outer space. BTW, I have been a SETI cruncher since 1998. Sorry, with this attitude you did not find any friends at SETI which look into this project. This is a common argumentation here, which sounds arogant and scares away a lot of SETI peoples. Including me. Everybody should crunch what they want and everybody has is own preferences and priorities. I don't mean to sound ridiculous but have we found *any* sign of alien intelligence yet? All those money spent in building radio telescopes... I wonder if they are really using those telescopes in receiving signals from outer space... More SETI user bashing ? As i that before, you should respect, that other has other preferences like you. But the SETI bashing here is to offending for me. Why should I crunch a project with a community whith no respect for other projects or peoples or inteterests ? - I see no sense any more here for me ! Also, SETI@home was the project which has distributed computing made popular. Everybody knows SETI@home. BOINC was developed from the SETI peoples at Berkeley. They have picked up the problems from the SETI Classic and has developed the system which could easly used for a lot of dc projects. Found an interesting zitate (from the movie Contact) : Executive: We must confess that your proposal seems less like science and more like science fiction. Ellie Arroway: Science fiction. Well you're right, it's crazy. In fact, it's even worse than that, nuts. [angrily slams down her briefcase and marches up to the desk] Ellie Arroway: You wanna hear something really nutty? I heard of a couple guys who wanna build something called an "airplane," you know you get people to go in, and fly around like birds, it's ridiculous, right? And what about breaking the sound barrier, or rockets to the moon, or atomic energy, or a mission to Mars? Science fiction, right? Look, all I'm asking, is for you to just have the tiniest bit of vision. You know, to just sit back for one minute and look at the big picture. To take a chance on something that just might end up being the most profoundly impactful moment for humanity, for the history... of history. Bye ! Hello Dotsch, I wasn't bashing SETI, and I'm sorry if I sound disrespectul. By the way, SETI was my first DC project, :-). cio_redulla ![]() |

It is case to either pull in the long toes or wear hard nose boots (boots for if bloods starts flowing)..... many an intention of wording is lost in translation on these multicultural, multilingual, multifaceted fora... tolerance is called for!

Helping each other is a universal call. I agree with Sekerob. There won't be peace unless everyone is willing to put the the others before himself or herself first, :-). ![]() |

You can get more members by some simple things.
1. The server is always down at sunday's. That's just stupid. They probably do that at night. But then it's daytime in europe!!! No one is waiting for that. people don't like to wait! They go to another project that doesn't go down of several hours. Get better system administrators. Good servers don't go off. They run for years without rebooting 2. The statistics update takes too long. The servers are now down twice a day. People want to see there points and don't want to wait for an hour. They go to other projects or stop helping grid computing 3. You should translate wcg in a lot of languages. It will bring people closer to wcg. And a lot of more people will help. Now only people that can read English very well will help. There a more people in the world then only english speaking people 4. Better manuals for installation and especially for boinc. The installation instructions are really poor. They don't explain how the program works. And normal people don't want to read a big manual. They stop with helping WCG or stop using boinc. Just make wcg more user friendly. P.S. I'm willing to translate the complete site in Dutch. |

hey s060319,
people don't like to wait! They go to another project that doesn't go down of several hour. if they use Boinc, they can set some workunits (WU's) in wait for crunching...but they should first find out how to do that... U should translate wcg in a lot of languages. It will bring people closer to wcg. And a lot of more people will help. Now only people that can read English very well will help. There a more people in the world then only english speaking people P.S. I'm willing to translate the complete site in Dutch. then I would be pleased to help, I'm from Belgium (Bredene, near Ostend) so let me know if needed... greets, Brecht |

Although I'd agree with s060319, I believe you shouldn't focus ONLY on the "easy-to-use" interface, multilingual programs, with manuals filled with colorful pictures, and "step-by-step" instructions.
----------------------------------------This kind of thing is essential, because helps to spread the project through people that usually don't know much about computers, "distributed computing", or even about AIDS. However, these people usually use the computer only at work, or only at home (well, maybe both), but for only few hours a day. As an example, let's say there's a guy who only uses his computer at work, and he works 8 hours a day, or at least let's pretend his computer is turned on for 8 hours a day. I, a "kinda geek" type of person, have 2 PC's at home, working 24/7 for the last 2 years (once every 3-4 days I reboot them). Not taking in account the differences between the machines, under these circumstances I'm doing the same work as 6 of "those guys", everyday. I'm not saying that you guys should focus only on people who have more than one computer at home/work, or keep them on all night. But this kind of 'user' would sure help! One way to "attract" this kind of user is encouraging the competition between users and/or teams. This is one thing that was pretty clear at SETI@Home (i'm not sure if it still is... the last time i did some work for them, was in 2000). A more competitive way of showing the user's stats could bring some more "competitive geeks", such as myself =P Well, these were just some thoughts... (And sorry about any eventual english mistake) Cheers! CaparicaJr BOINCstats [Edit 1 times, last edit by CaparicaJr-DrMartinez at Feb 28, 2007 3:42:20 PM] |

I dont realy agree with you CaparicaJr-DrMartinez...
you have 2PC's at your home working 24/7, you make the work of 6 guys (maby more) but there is much more persones like them then there are persones like you. So imagine a guy that puts WCG on 10 computers at his work does more than you do per day... the number of persones counts a lot even if it's only 2 hours a day. |

..... This could also be helped by giving more choices to users, besides BOINC and the WCG software. Both of them requires the "installing process", which maybe could be avoided with "console versions". This kind of version could be used in computers with some restrictions (not enough previleges to install, and stuff like that). This way I could do some work at my college, for instance..... Cheers! CaparicaJr Hi CaparicaJr, Please consider: The paragraph facilitating installation without installation permission is against WCG policy (and any DC policy). Only install where you are the owner or obtain permission of the owner of the computer(s), without circumventing the Owners/It departments rules and restrictions. Running it unauthorized can do more harm than good, however well intended. thx
