Sorry to hear that. SSD's are cheap enough these days, and extremely reliable, so that's what I use. Not sure if I've ever had one fail. Maybe in the early days. Now, one of my systems has been upgraded to a PCIe nvme SSD, with read and write of up to 3,000 Mb/s. It was less than $70. Of course the motherboard has to have a spot for it as well. I'm not sure if any project is accelerated by extremely fast I/O, but if so, its ready for it. That looks like a sweet unit. And you have a pretty sweet machine in which to install it. For my purposes, it would likely be overkill. The flash drives are cheap and mostly pretty reliable. Just like an SSD there are no moving parts and they must just use a trickle of electricity. I got my last batch of 16gb drives at an Office Max store closing. I think it was US $9.99 for the 3 pack. I have one of them with over 70 cpu years on it and it is still going. Of course, not all of them have lasted that long. Since these are dedicated crunchers, the 16gb capacity has proven to be more than enough. Even with the 24 thread machines, there does not seem to be any kind of I/O bottleneck (these are USB 2). Now if there was as much I/O as the Clean Energy Project, that probably would have created a bottleneck. Cheers

Cheers That's pretty good return on investment. Whatever works. Nice that you can just pop those into any machine pretty easily and have a bootable OS. I had unchecked the box "run manager at login" on boinc a few days ago to do some system testing. Well yesterday I restarted the computer and forgot about it, so nothing was running on that system for a large portion of the day yesterday. Oops. Aiming for at least 10 year badges in the 2 newest projects. I seem to remember some new climate projects being announced last year which never came to fruition...wonder what happened. Oh well, will keep crunching away. Good day |

Aiming for at least 10 year badges in the 2 newest projects. I should get to the 10 year mark on Open Pandemics in about 6 more days. The Africa Rainfall project will be quite a while yet. With the scarcity of TB units, I don't think 10years will be attainable, but I leave it checked so I get the occasional work unit, now down to 1 or 2 a week. Cheers

Joe, very impressive contribution by you and this small team. Currently I need to be strategic: I have my little i3 2-core (4 thread) trying to get a bronze African rainfall badge. I look back on my contribution history and I was short on Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 and never achieved a badge. I will try not to let this happen again. Once I get a bronze badge in AR, I will open up to all projects again.

Sorry, I do not know of a software fix in Linux for a wifi reset. I rarely have to reset my wifi, maybe every other month or so. I have no idea why it locks up occasionally. I unplug it and wait about 30 seconds and plug it back it in. A hardware rest. Cheers

Just wonder do you have possibility to make hot-soup as open, without any PW&ID?
I have one craptop (Ubuntu) which has run like three years without my knowledge from me on open Wi-Fi. W10 on same open Sput-Nik, need to get logged on manually after every update. |

Must be an expression of the inscrutable Suomalainen. Three years on open wifi without your knowledge - Wow ! Yes, my wifi has a password. However, I have nothing running on Win10. I have heard too many tales of of all those insufferable updates. Nor do I run any laptops as, once again, I have heard too many tales of heat issues and other annoyances they have. Cheers
