I have also had good luck with Linux Mint. I am trying another one right now and will evaluate it in a couple of weeks.

MX Linux is super lightweight and stripped down and derived from Debian. I would have used it if I hadn't broke it trying to install the AMD GPU drivers. I had Linux Mint set up on another SSD so I swapped it out and got to crunching.
----------------------------------------I loaded Lubuntu but its not as lightweight as they wanted me to believe. Linux Mint was better than Lubuntu. MX Linux: https://mxlinux.org/

Coincidence. That is the variety I am trying. It was the most popular on some linux site I can't remember, so I thought why not. I have it on my X5670 machine running 24/7. In the future I may try Puppy or DSL. Once I start one of the 24/7 machines, I rarely look at them other than to see if they are still running, so if I can get BOINC installed and running, that is just about all I need.

Pic from a day...
Please before click, there is some contradiction values (sex, politics, religion) behind link... I did not take pic to promote those, more like that I cannot remember that square ever be so abandoned. Pic taken literally Friday morning and I literally was only soul (evil one, some litter) anywhere close to building. Normally I have pan camera little a bit higher, since couple tourist division on those doors. But not today.. So happy.. Well not happy since there is not tourists here or some. But for sunrise with still warm wind, it was so nice.... https://aijaa.com/cWOGlK |

I am a bit disappointed with MX Linux. It runs the work units just fine, but I am used to 99%+ utilization, mostly 100% with cpu time equaling elapsed time. With MX I am getting about 91% utilization very consistently. On a 24/7 system, this difference adds up over time. In the next day or two I am going to switch it to something else, maybe back to Linux Mint. I am not pleased to lose 9% to some unknown overhead. I will see how the next one does.

Just got 10yr on OPN. ARP work units seem to be crunching nicely as well, but they are resource intensive for sure. Playing around with how many cores I need to leave free to efficiently crunch them, and without lagging, as the computer is used for everyday tasks from gaming to video editing to web browsing as well.

Sgt. Joe: That is interesting about MX. I have been looking for a no-frills linux distro that allows maximum performance for BOINC. Like you, I very rarely use my systems and I rather just let them crunch with the monitor off. Let me know what you find out.

This new link was released in August for the OpenPandemics project. They indicated they are working on GPU work units. I guess I need to get my GPU issues sorted.....

Like you, I very rarely use my systems and I rather just let them crunch with the monitor off. Let me know what you find out. For starters I have tried Puppy (bionicpuppy). Unfortunately, the repositories for the package manager list a BOINC meta package, but also say it is currently unavailable. I will see if the newer version which appears to be in beta yet, can access a repository with a BOINC package I can install. I should know later today I hope. Cheers
