Make sure you all check your WCG projects page. The COVID-19 project is live and when I visited my projects, it was "unchecked" (not getting tasks). I went ahead and participated and am now getting lots or jobs. Hopefully a badge soon.

I went ahead and participated and am now getting lots or jobs. Hopefully a badge soon. Good advice. When the time started getting close to opening (by my judgement) I checked the box for "opt me in to new projects." I also lowered all my queues to a minimum so when the project started I would get some right away, and I did. Once the project actually started, I lowered my participation in the other projects to just a few so I could keep my finger in helping the other projects. I would guess I am about 95%+ in Pandemics at the moment. So far they run really well and without a hitch so far. I did have to opt out of African Rainfall on the machines where I run Linux on a USB because they use too much storage. I found out during the Beta run this would be a problem, so I only have that project enabled on one machine which is running on a hard drive. The techs stated they would scale the project so even if they had a surge in the numbers of volunteers, they could handle the surge. So far they seem to be right on target. It is nice to hear from you from time to time. Cheers

My 2 crunchers are full! Bronze already. Congrats. It looks like they will stay full if you let them. I have about 27 pages of pending validations for this project, so we will see how fast they get quorum of 1. Cheers

Well this new covid project finally gave me the push to upgrade my i7-2600k system. Swapped out the CPU/Ram/motherboard to the latest AMD Ryzen 3950X (16c/32t). this new cpu cuts down wu times on covid from 3 hours to 2 hours or so average compared to the old i7, with 4x the number of threads. Pretty impressed. Not only that but the system power consumption is basically the same (230w) Wasn't cheap but definitely worth it.

Your numbers shot up, I was wondering if you had added something. Let us know how it is handling the heat, as I have seen others who seem to have some problems when running flat out. Cheers

I looked this morning and saw I had one cruncher down. The flash drive on it went belly up, so I had about 4 pages of detached work units. I set up another flash drive with Linux and fired it off again. I probably lost 16 to 20 hours of work on that system. It has been a long time since I had a flash drive fail on one of these systems, but at least the fix is simple, straightforward and cheap. The new 16gb flash drive was US $5.00 or so on sale. I keep about 3 or 4 on hand just for this contingency.
----------------------------------------I keep looking to upgrade my systems and I will retire the Q6600 when I find another deal on a newer system. Cheers

hopefully you got back up and running okay.
I am away from my systems for a few days and noticed the new system threw a couple error wu's. The system is up and running and still producing. Have a feeling the trend micro antivirus installed on that machine is blocking a few files, have seen that action before. Now i've got 20 pages of PV. As for temps, the Ryzen does run a little hot. I have a aftermarket air cooler on it with a 120mm fan. It ran about 80c under 100% load at stock speed with turbos up to 4.5 ghz. I have since tweaked it by hard locking the speed at 4.1 ghz on all cores and undervolting to around 1.2 volts. Temps are now stable at around 70c which is still warm but should be long term reliable. we shall see. I could always limit it a bit further if needed. |
