Hi Joe, hi chaps!
Spell checker did not found any funny erection from my syntax, so did just add couple of those myself... What I was wondering, that maybe Bearcats Linux NIC is getting down down only on Graphical User Interface... Absolutely shot in the dark, no much details where to start comping, so kind of would start to keep NIC on open Wi-FI for few days, would give some starting point to comp further. From my experience, half of these issues are coming from høtspøt end. Some *Ethically accepted form of writing I think: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Redskins |

Some indian *redskin summer here. Day temperatures been close to +30'C ( +86'F)... Having time of my life... *Ethically accepted form of writing I think: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Redskins The term "redskin" to describe Native Americans is more and more described as a pejorative (a word expressing contempt or disapproval). I do not think the term "Indian Summer" has any bad connotations as it is used to describe unusually pleasant weather usually in autumn (October-November) before the rigors of winter set in. But, I could be wrong. The history of United States is filled with quite a number of derogatory terms for many different groups of people based on their ethnicity, race, religion, gender, height, physical appearance, etc. As a non native speaker of English, I would not expect that you would be aware of some of the subtleties of the language, so hopefully you find this useful. Thank you for the advice on the wifi. Temperatures here are similar 85-92F(30-33C). We need rain badly. Cheers

I got my African Rainfall bronze badge!
----------------------------------------Sadly, the computer serves has my home server and had a disk go out. I am waiting on a new set and will need to shut down (no crunching) until I can get the raid rebuilt and expanded. Im going to change from RAID 6 to RAID 1. The RAID six was interesting but just to complicated to manage. I decided to just buy two 8TB drives and hook em up as RAID 1. Simple is better.

Since you were running Raid 6, I presume you did not lose any information. I am curious how you transfer information from Raid 6 to just 2 drives. With 2 8TB drives in Raid 1, what is is your net storage ? Just curious. Edit: Good news here is we got rain 1.2 in (3.05 cm). Cheers

I have not lost any data. I had five 2T disks = 6TB. Its currently running on 4 disks but it wont take a new drive and is acting up.
----------------------------------------I have an Adaptec RAID card with 2 SSF-8087 connectors. It can handle up to 8 disks. I will connect the two 8T drives, create RAID 1 and then just copy everything from the RAID 6. Rebuilding from cloud back-up would take ages. The RAD1 with two 8T drives will yield an 8T drive (one drive is a mirror). I have about 6T data now between computers. My wife is a photographer who shoots RAW and refuses to delete.

NAS would be the easy way out. Messing around with Linux server is a aggravating hobby of mine. Do NAS units crunch?

NAS would be the easy way out. Messing around with Linux server is a aggravating hobby of mine. Do NAS units crunch? I don't own a NAS because I don't need one, so I am not qualified to answer the question of whether they can crunch. But I will speculate that since they have a cpu and some sort of operating system, they probably can. Given they are designed for an I/O purpose, I don't think they would be terribly efficient for crunching. Perhaps someone who has one and has tried it can chime in with their experience. There is a nice review of various NAS devices here. Maybe see if you can a a 4 bay system and stock it with 12tb drives. That should give her some headroom for a while. Cheers

One of my servers is down. It has suddenly developed an inability to download new work or upload any completed work. HTTP transient error is message. It is connected to to the same ethernet switch and same KVM switch as the other three machines. It is the only one with a hard drive left over from another machine, all the others are on flash drives. I shut down for the moment and will restart it in a couple of hours. This machine has been running faithfully for several years, so I am a bit baffled. If it still doesn't transfer data I might need to swap out the network card. I have never had a network card go bad, so I am grasping at straws so to speak. It does have a full days work on it just waiting to be sent.
----------------------------------------Edit: It is not network card problem. I reset the project. It is not a BOINC problem, because I uninstalled BOINC and reinstalled it. I did lose all the work, but it still will not download any new work. It still says HTTP transient error. Try again later, servers might be busy. I might have to reinstall the operating system, unless somebody has a better idea. Edit2: I detached from the project. I tried to re-attach to the project and I get the message Internet access OK, unable to attach to the project, servers may be temporarily down. Still baffled. I might send an email to WCG and see if the techs have any advice. Edit3: I gave up on the hard drive and pulled it. That machine is now running off of a flash drive. Cheers

Upgrade of hard disks is underway. Transferring 4T+ of data through Ethernet is not a trivial task. Using "rsync" makes it tolerable.
----------------------------------------note to self: plan on some higher speed switches and ports on my next upgrade.
