Always good to hear from you. Nice picture. Hardly any snow though.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Going to try putting new thermal paste on the dually so will be off line a few days. Maybe I can find what's going on when i'm pulling off the heat sinks.

Sounds like you have decided it is a heat dissipation problem. Does the case have enough airflow ?
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Has plenty of air flow. This a mega case that can house 12 hard drives if I wanted. May not be the issue but worth a shot. Will look at the chips for burn marks or anything else out of the ordinary. Also take a close look at the motherboard for any issues.

The chip on the right doesn't look too bad, but the one on the left looks fried. Are these the Xeon x56xx chips ? If so, I think you can pick these up pretty reasonbly on eBay. Dis the heat sink fan give out on the one on the left or the thermal paste dry out ?
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The thermal past dried out pretty bad. Will let it set overnight to dry a bit. then gradually ramp up crunching to see how it does. Zeon westmere 2.93 X5670's. If i do try another processor in same socket, might go for the X5680. Surprised newegg wants $100 bucks for these. Ebay has some for $38 bucks. Will see how mine do before deciding.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Will be crunching with my main computer for awhile. The dually boots up but thats it. Won't even post. Not worth investing in this old technology. It had a good run though. My son is bringing back the Dell hex I got for free awhile back so will put that online when it gets here.
