The servers: The same thing happened to my desktop. On my system the fans weren't moving enough air and the north bridge chip was hot enough to light a cigarette on.
I've noticed more people on older and newer machines with the same complaint { both crunchers and non crunchers }. Beginning to wonder if there is a virus or just plain ol junk ware messing with the north bridge chips. The Dell: If it gets through the post tests fine, check the battery voltage on the cmos battery. A lot of them crap out after 2-5 years. Most are 2032's, a few are 2016's. Some cmos's are sensitive to the smallest voltage drop. |

Sgt. Joe:
On the server, is the power supply fan moving the same air as it use to? If the problem persists, crack open the power supply to see if there are any discolored capacitors, or if any of them are slightly "pushed up" on top. Computer power supplies and power supplies on flat screen televisions are bad about causing thermal breakdown in capacitors, usually those located near a voltage regulator. |

Still running full bore on all 8 cores this morning. No problems so far. Years ago I had a couple of Gateways which had popped a capacitor on the motherboard. Salvaged what I could and recycled the rest. Cheers

On motherboards, it's usually lightning or a power surge that pops the caps ( The surge can come through an un-grounded phone or ethernet line as well ).
----------------------------------------If you are using DSL through any telephone company, make sure everything is grounded normally and also grounded to the same ground that your electrical system is grounded to. A difference in potential between the phone system and your home electrical system can develop and arc through your electronics if both systems aren't grounded together. This problem was really prevalent when people used dial ups. It still is on badly grounded phone equipment/modems. Generally, cable companies ground their stuff good. If they don't their signals will drift. Sorry so long winded, been repairing computers and electronics since 1980, retired now and bored. I'm posting so much in case others are having problems as well. Have you been running Zika??? if so check out it's thread. I had a problem with Zika in both the computers and the droids.. The Zika file gets stuck into a continuous loop, I wonder if it's having anything to do with over heating and shut downs.. [Edit 1 times, last edit by gta198 at Jun 23, 2016 5:12:03 PM] |

A couple of those pictures look like they could have been taken just down the road from me. They have a comfortable air of familiarity about them. It is interesting you have a picture of a dial telephone. I still have one in my kitchen and we still use it. It is extremely dependable and in 35+years the only thing I have replaced is the cord.

Hi Joe!
----------------------------------------Sorry that I have not have time to pop around. Some works stuff sucking me like some black hole or something, managing fine work and sleep clothes. House is sure nice on summertime. Hundred years old, so basement (some man cave and sauna there) is little chilly even on summer since underground, but top floor (three together) really dream on summertime. Some carrot, did "dig" this from my balcony. I'll go back to garden when they legalize DDT and napalm ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Quite a night this past evening. A tornado about 4 to 5 miles west of me and then it tracked to the northeast. So far have only heard about some tree and powerline damage. I have heard of some storm damage about 20 miles to the southwest also. Right where I am at there was virtually no wind, but we got some intense rains. The gauge this morning lists 3.25 inches(8.25cm). If it had been more spread out it would have been better, but it came in intense bursts, but thankfully no hail. I haven't checked the garden yet, but hopefully no damage there.
----------------------------------------Also, welcome to Whirl08. Glad to see you aboard. Cheers
