Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Kind of cheating when they are that close.

Just like they usually do, they must know when hunting season starts because they seem to disappear into thin air and then magically reappear as soon as the season ends. laughing

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

A few interesting things have happened lately. One recent morning I went down to the garden and saw a good sized white object in the ditch. It turns out it was the white belly of a deer which had been hit by a car overnight. A fairly small deer, maybe around 80 lbs(37kilos) or so. Still had its fawn spots on. It had been hit squarely in the hindquarters and torn up pretty good. Probably died instantly. The road in front of my place is a 55 mph (about 90kph), but people routinely drive by much faster than that, especially at night, when deer are active. Given the proliferation of deer this year, I am pretty sure this won't be the last one I find dead in the ditch.
I dug most of my potatoes, as most of the vines had already dried up. They are not nearly as plentiful or as good sized as last year. I think it was too much rain and not enough sun. We have had about our third wettest August since 1900.
The tomatoes and the sweet peppers however have enjoyed the extra water. They have both done quite well, as have the squash and pumpkins. I picked a couple of squash the other day and we had the first one. It had nice color and fairly sweet flesh.

I had to do some house maintenance and replaced the north and south fascia boards on the house extension off the kitchen. They had become partially rotten and needed to go. After removing the south one, I proceeded to remove the old insulation. Had quite a surprise when I disturbed about a dozen bats. That old insulation had never been installed properly and had probably been harboring bats for a while. I installed new insulation and fixed all the holes I could find. I think I have batproofed the area, at least for the forseeable future. Now if it ever stops raining for a while, I will get the new boards painted.
Never a dull moment around here.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Weather keeps cool and I'll be able to fire up the beast. BTW, newegg is selling a 8 core HP Z420 for $389. Uses the E5-2670 Xeon in it. Sandy bridge but should make a good cruncher. Tempting.

The weather is supposed to be in the 60's for the next several days. Really need it to dry out for a while though. If it is nice I need to do some shingle repairs for my mother sometime this week. I told her I thought I could do the job without too much problem, but I do need a dry day and a day when she is available. She is an awfully busy lady for being in her late 80's. Just about everyday she is going somewhere and doing something. For some reason, my week has also filled up with something going on someplace everyday in the coming week. One way or another we will get it all worked out.
My Sandybridge I7 works very well and I wish I had put the system together sooner. I looked at that system (HPz420 for $389)on Newegg and that is a good price for that machine. Too bad it features only a single processor and is not a dual processor machine. Then it would be really awesome.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

My westmeres are still chugging along fine. Can't get win 7 pro to update since its been sitting all summer. Did a total cleaning a few weeks ago. Talk about large dust bunnies. Fired it up to check updates. Won't do it. Tried most of the suggestions from Microsoft. Still won't. About to install Ubuntu. Wife's laptop doing the same crap. I know Microsoft is doing this to piss folks off to get them to update to win10. I won't.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Those processors cost a little over 300 bucks new. Ebay has used ones for around 100 bucks. Temping but the boards are a little pricey.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I finally got tired of waiting for the first frost, so I cleaned out the garden of all the pumpkin and squash vines. Normally we should have seen the first frost by the 3rd week in September, but not this year. Some of those vines were still blooming and setting new pumpkins and squash. Most of the vines were plenty juicy yet. I did get some nice results, but a number of the pumpkins are still green, but I hope they will ripen yet. If they don't, they will get fed to the chickens. I still have about 15 feet(5m) of potatoes to dig, but they can wait a few days yet. Maybe by the end of this week or early next week we can get that frost. We definitely need something to kill off the mosquito population for a while.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It was 28 this morning heading out fishing. Brrrrr. Stayed warm last night though, now that the cruncher in the bedroom is crunching away. Got a feeling we are in for a heavy snow/long winter.
