Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That crime story, is urban legend here on EU.
As long as there has been Euro, Au has been equal currency.

As long as purchase is under money laundry limit (some 20kE per day I think) there is not any record what so ever.
Then just multiply how many shop there is even on mediocre town selling this element and put it power of winos who will perform shopping with price of vodka bottle.
So in one day on one mediocre town, there is grand potential to migrate colored paper to another currency.
If need to get it outside EU, next plane to Singapore. Fill the paper (sure, carrying lot of Austria Philharmoniker), choose the red line and show original recipe.
There is conversion fee from paper to gold and from gold to paper, which nobody really criminal mind does not mind, since something like 1,5% per transaction.

But it is absolute unbearable for those, who has own/another peoples honest money. You cannot pay pensions or food bill on gold.
Baling colored paper to fox hole will yield some interest since current deflation, so is actually reasonable investment.

They did face this very same challenge on Japan around 1980's, after some muddy field, size of stamp (gravel under Imperial palace) did exceed value of California.
Government did donate free money for every citizen on form of coupons, but everybody as thump rule, did just hide those for bad days under mattress or something.
Honestly, where the heck they would need use couple of hundreds, since everybody was already millionaire.
Sure they did not have oil, fertilizer, uranium or anything to expand their living standard from middle age (it was really crappy time on Japan), but it of course was not a problem, because rest of world, merrily switch their wealth to Japanese colored paper.

But will rest of the world obey as blindly European colored paper, is not so clear.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Some observations.
Stories tells that if you are inside free falling elevator cage, you just enjoy total freedom about gravity from rest of your life.

Cannot say about that, but sure can say that if this phenomenal happens on funicular, there is something like pretty smooth ride and equal boring life after that.

Sure, there I was traveling b.a.u. Then all the sudden not so b.a.u; violent sound effect, kind of equal to 12 gauge shoot gun, coming under floor. Some tiny moment of not so controlled ride (free slide down), then some safety mechanism did catch a ball, and then like so yawn...

Honestly, I did not need to try make absolutely any correction to keep balance or anything, that safety mechanism was excellent on that matter for sure. So there was grand amount of intelligent build inside breaking mechanism to perform slow down to protect grannies etc.
But sure did enjoy a lot on that tiny moment, when alea was kind so very est.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That sounds like some good engineering, although it sounds like it did give you at least one heart pounding moment. Did you ever find out what malfunctioned to cause the brakes to engage ?
Cheers

I wish I could, but since just traveler, there was really any reason me to break into shaft.

But some theory for sure:
Funicular travels through zona, which is under building constructions.

I think that rails did take damage and ends of track parts did become separate enough, to cause power peak to cause emergency breaking to circuit monitoring system.
Metal rope moving cage, was intact for sure.
This I can distill from that there was absolutely not any burning metal scent on air, which would be b.a.u. if brakes on rails would need to carry any responsibility.

You know, kind of when I build tiny hydro plant to my cottage.
Equal three phase motor (whit some boat propeller to work as kaplan).
When I sing propeller to stream, I will shoot it with full power to get it revolve (water flow does not have enoug energy to start from zero) and it will run almost close to grid frequency (lacking some since friction of bearings).
Pretty soon water stream will start to turn propeller, and on that moment when it will make propeller to turn faster than grid frequency, it will turn motor to generator. So hardware will start to resist water flow and shoot this breaking energy to grid.

And pretty sure that this was what did happen today.
I have been on tram, metro and train accident. Those just did smell like seriously burning metal before GRAND SLAM, but this case these was anything smelling like burning metal, just this BANG.

So really think, that same metal rope that lift me up, did also break me down. It just did need to have some tiny moment to make this role change.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Things have been quite busy here. I have finished putting in the garden as of last Tuesday. I got the pumpkins, squash, gourds, and tomatoes all planted, just in time for the rains to start. We got about 2 inches (6 cm) over the last several days. It was well needed as it had become quite dry. I have been harvesting asparagus and rhubarb. The weatherhas almost been too good for the asparagus as it grows alomost too fast to harvest unless you keep an eye on it everyday. School will be ending this week, so my volunteer hours there will no longer be necessary, freeing up some time to get some projects done I have been putting off, like getting rid of junk I haven't used in twenty or more years. With the warm and humid weather just keeping the grass mowed will use up considerable time. There will be no staying idle here.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I was working in my back garden and noticed this tree. This is the work of the pileated woodpecker. We don't see him very often, but by the looks of this tree he has been busy. It immediately reminded me of the picture "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. It also brought to mind the trees in "The Wizard of Oz" which throw apples at Dorothy and the Scarecrow.

Cheers
