----------------------------------------Thanks so much. While it is of little relevance, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is in the next town over from where I live. So I feel attached. I am more concretely attached having donated a few pieces of computer equipment excess to my needs to the project via my across-the-street neighbor who worked there. Our local newspaper had a great article about Dr. Foran's project and its results (Home News Tribune, Tuesday, May 20, 2008, pg D1) . I keep it in my briefcase to show people what can be done when WCG projects harness the power of 95,000 computers. Here are the big lines in the article: "...What would have taken 137 years on one desktop PC can be processed in one day on the computer program system developed by Dr Foran and his staff. Approximately 100,000 specimens are analyzed in one session...With a four-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Institute of Health and a collaboration among IBM's Help Defeat Cancer project and the World Community Grid, Foran and his staff are taking cancer diagnosis to the highest level...a portable, deployable, grid-enabled, clinician-decision support system...." I am just recently into GPU computing myself on a new desktop machine. I look forward to the GPU eventuality at HCC and hopefully other WCG based projects. I am staying away from the beta at present, as I am already involved in two sketchy adventures, the "T4T" project from CERN, and the CERN/VM project from Berkeley. That is enough messiness for one person. Thanks again for the clarification. |
