Well these OpenCL GPU tasks have a fair amount of CPU time at the start and end. So if you allocate a CPU core to support these GPU tasks your computer will be more efficient overall as the GPU tasks will complete faster. This is assuming that GPU work is consistently available. When GPU work is not available a CPU core would be idle. This should be handled automatically by BOINC for high CPU usage GPU applications but often isn't because variable performance potential of different contributors' hardware makes projects reluctant to do so. It's kind of a "can't please everyone" scenario. I understand all this and when the gpu units become consistently available I will do that, I am just saying that is it worth it to change Boinc to do it automatically NOW with everything else going on too? I HAVE done it already for my Nvidia card as it takes more alot of a cpu core when it is running. I do it manually when I see the Beta units come thru too, I just have too many machines to always see it. One question though, if I have more than one gpu in a machine, and I have two machines like that, will WCG require one cpu core for EACH gpu or will one cpu core be enough to fulfill both gpu's needs. |

As few and far between as the gpu beta units are right now here at WCG, I'm personally not going to worry about freeing up a cpu for my gpu. If I decide to crunch GPU later when it's launched, then I will do that.
----------------------------------------As for your last question, I don't know, but to me, logic would seem to point towards the fact that if a GPU unit uses about (just an example here, by the way) 0.16 of a cpu while crunching the gpu work unit, then I'd say you could (theoretically, of course) have up to 6 gpu's going at once in your machine and be fine. Now, this is all what seems logical to me, not what might really be the way it's handled. i5-12600K (3.7GHz), 32GB DDR5, Win11 64bit Home |

As a percent Bugg you are correct but remember the same.science requires the same resources.
If the CPU portion is anything above 30% than I will disable a core personally speaking. Since the beta for my.570 was taking .80 of my CPU. One was.disabled. I hope the % isn't that high when it officially starts though. |

For those that only want to do WCG, but do not want to have their GPU idle, set backup projects [GPUgrid e.g.] with zero project weight / resource share. If WCG has non, the client will go fetch them from your backup projects. Theory as yet not seen this in operation. Who does know is asked to share. I have been using SETI set to zero resource share as a backup to GPUGrid. It seems to work very well for me. Whenever GPUGrid is down, SETI keeps my GPU working. Of course when WCG comes online, I plan on dropping SETI. I have always understood that if you have a hyper-threaded CPU, freeing a core for the GPU is a must. In my case with a non-hyper-threaded quad, freeing a core would not offset the loss of CPU work. |

Makes sense since a Hyperthreaded core is really half a physical core. On an Quad-HT effectively an 8 threaded device, you'd in practice loose at start half a CPU core production. Would BOINC not be using that 8th thread, the 7 have quasi more juice at disposal... Wonder how in that setup it will run, so stand-by... testing imminently to see if any job suddenly will run faster or if the OS will spread the spare cycles out to all...
.. and a few minutes later, it is interesting to see how 5 threads continue to run near 100% but not fully as is the case if BOINC processor use is set to 100%. 1 thread runs about 80% and 2 run about 70%. Total load per Task Manager is steady on 88%, which is pretty much 7 of 8 threads equivalent and the CPU runs 1C cooler. Looks like W7 is managing to spread the headroom around. Now to understand if this translates to a general improvement in CPU time duration. The CPU Hrz do not show as were the multiplier increased. --//-- |

Ok, I need a question answered:
----------------------------------------Who do I need to write to to get at least ONE of these GPU units sent to me? I'm starting to feel like the red headed stepchild out here in New Hampshire. I mean heck, we do bathe daily like the rest of you, don't beat our wives or children and do have at least a few of the social graces! Don't you guys like us New Englander's? |

No one is getting any WUs now.

FWIW I think the Nvidia card holders got shorted on this run. Of the 39 I received only 2 made it to my GTX 460.

You have to realize that the only thing being sent right now are a limited number of BETA work units...this is not the actual project. Once the actual project is released (not beta) for GPU, there should be plenty of work units to go around. Be patient...I have also not even received 1 WU. |

Or maybe IBM knows HCC GPU means that XS is gonna trounce them in the stats - and is purposely withholding betas to XS members...
