An EMERGENCY ALERT HAS BEEN ISSUED IN THE USA. A NEBRASKA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IS FLOODING AND A FIRE HAS OCCURRED IN THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE COOLING POOLS. An internet calling campaign has forced the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency to isssue a National Emergency Alert after a news black out was detected by concerned US citisens.
http://www.pakalertpress.com/2011/06/17/us-or...d-nebraska-nuclear-plant/ Please spread the word as I am deeply concerned for the people in the region. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agengy Telephone number is (US) 855.211.2452 or 855.211.2454 Thank you for reading this, What do you think of this news black out? Would it happen where you are? |

per Reuters it's still dry as of 30 minutes ago.
----------------------------------------http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/17/us-...ear-idUSTRE75G4Z120110617 Doesn't matter as it's been shut down since 9 April. ![]() ![]() |

Looks as if there is no News black out Google has several thousand feeds It seems that the reactors were already shut down for routines. The hazard is the cooling ponds that contain the spent fuel have lost power to pumps As the event occurred on the 7th of June I'm surprised it hasn't hit the headiness before the info is there?
----------------------------------------No Over flying Standard practice in UK NO OVER FLYING of Nuclear site at any time PS @PecosRiverM The Reactors are not the hazard currently . The loss of power to the cooling pond is. Its similar to the Japanese event there is a huge amount of heat that needs to be removed. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Jun 17, 2011 7:39:15 PM] |

There is a second plant called Cooper that is still running. The news agencies were blacking out until a calling campaign to NEMA forced the black out to lift. We are now concerned about the minimal news coverage as to the reach of the risk.

A few of us became concerned when the news was not reporting an electrical fire in the Ft Calhoun NPP. The news did break but we feel that it is less than what is needed because the water flows through multiple urban and rural areas after it leaves the plant.
Also, why was the local evacuation only called after we sent out a national request for call to NEMA? @densnaps THIS IS THE SAME NUCLEAR REACTOR AS THE ONES AT FUKUSHIMA, the same GE model. |

Firstly, keep asking Questions......
----------------------------------------Secondly.. The reactor type is not an issue, as its already stated its shut down, what ever the design, basic needs are safe cooling systems with back ups. The working plant would be driven within safety parameters Remember the staff at the plant have families in the nearby location and I cant believe they would want to work in an unsafe manner that would put them at risk. The lack of information is another issue given the recent Japanese happenings Check this link out http://www.thenation.com/blog/161511/cold-comfort-senate-nuclear-safety-hearing Relates to the Japanese event and how US reactors would fare in similar situations To be honest it doesnt look good back ups are minimal My experience in uk power plants alternate power supplies Diesel generators, Gas turbines and Dc Back ups Like I said Questions Do need to be asked ...... Informed Questions and answers that can be understood |

----------------------------------------Also, why was the local evacuation only called after we sent out a national request for call to NEMA? ******************************* I dont understand the reason for the local Evacuation order if there was no escape of material Maybe just as a precaution without knowing exact details of the plant . the water that flows from the plant should be safe. It will not have had contact with radio active material .Main cooling water source from rivers or sea, condenses steam from that has driven the Turbine generators Via a Heat exchanger . Any other cooling of nuclear components will also be via heat exchangers . The water after it has passed through the plant will have had no measurable change other than a rise in temperature Terms that are used in these events by the media are misleading, Radiation is only able to affect the population if you can see the source just like light from a light bulb protection from Radiation is by three things shielding if you cant see it there is a barrier your safe, distance the further you are away from the source the safer you are or time the smaller time exposed the least damage . Contamination is an escape of radio active material due to damage to the fuel from the reactor this can be airborne from explosions not nuclear explosion but in the Japanese event it was an hydrogen explosion Communities close to UK power plants are issued with Potassium Iodate tablets to be taken in the case of a reactor incident.these protect against radio active Iodine that gathers in the thyroid . they load the thyroid and you cant take the nasty stuff on board There is a world body that looks at Nuclear events called Wano You also have a National body in the United States see this link http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov/2011/06/17/rumors-and-the-rising-river/ ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by densnaps at Jun 17, 2011 10:02:53 PM] |

The reports say that the fire effected the electrical system in the basement of the Ft Calhoun Plant. The cooling system for the spent fuel pool specificly.
There are also some unconfirmed reports that they are using river water to cool the spent fuel pool which I think is likely fear mongering. An associate from Colorado is on his way to Omaha Ne, to get radiation readings. His family is in Omaha and I guess that's what you do when you're worried about family. We'll see. I sent a request to IAEA for information and I also reviewed the new safety guidelines that they just released today. It seems that most of the world Nuclear experts have been at an event, and the product is new safety guidelines based on what we learned from Fukushima (IAEA words: What we have learned....) So I recieved a message from my friend in Nebraska that Brian Jennings "touched on it" on the national news tonight. No specifics. Sad about the lack of concern, glad my friend is getting some info. I'll check out your links, then I need to finish up the neglected work I should be doing. ![]() |

PSS The Neclear Regulatory Commitee (US) is sending an inspection team out to monitor the situation 24 hrs a day. I think that is about what is called for in light of the world wide distrust of nuclear operators. (No Offense to Nuclear Engineers, I mean in the corporate sense)
Have a good weekend all. |

Pardon me for going off a bit here, but this feels like either fear mongering, or trolling at it's best.
There are far far more pressing concerns regarding the flooding along the Missouri River than the nuclear plant. Overwhelmed and leaking levies protecting homes, and the people already flooded out for example. |
