I didn't realise there was such a problem--

Threw in the girl thing to make myself laugh, I did.
I'm not one to run, or I would not have confronted the snipes. We are all a lot more secure in what we have learned. Australia has a piece on the plants, and the water rose perolously close today. Two up river levies are in danger and that can be catastrophic. Last reports i have from locals about 15 hrs ago. Massive storm front moved thru today and continues to drop expect 5 inched of rain. These folks are in the midst of a 100 year storm and tornado watch and warnings, flash floods. There are now a lot of reports on the net about "rumors" on Ft Calhoun. I guess that's what happens, but cover the news and those things don't scare the crud out of others. Still dicey. See what the nrxt few days hold for the mid-west. |

Sorry about the coal mine thing, it has taken a lot out of the earth and it's people.
----------------------------------------What I do understand is that in China they do not have the freedom of the press that we have where I am. And then it isn't valued. Some of the people in my group are commenting on the price we pay when we don't value the press. Frankly, I'm bushed and I hope this all settles down nice and quiet. Have a good week. It isn't "dicey" at all. Not as it relates to the nuclear plant anyway.
KETV is the local ABC affiliate in Omaha. http://www.ketv.com/missouri-river-flooding-e...rage/28293307/detail.html - June 20 http://www.ketv.com/missouri-river-flooding-e...rage/28281114/detail.html - June 18 http://www.ketv.com/missouri-river-flooding-e...rage/28270268/detail.html - June 17 |

Earthquakes occur around the world as does flooding, but most people have the sense not to rebuild in flood planes, mudslide zones, earthquake impact zones, beside volcano's and so on. China on the other hand even lights fires under its very own feet, but perhaps this self inflicted disaster will be brought to an end soon.
Might even reduce coal imports..., nah! By the way, I don't think comparing one disastrous energy production system with another disastrous one is the way forward. Clean Energy system exist; no fallout, poisonous gas emissions or other pollutants. I know which I would prefer at the end of my street. |

Good job-- The Des Moines Metro area is less than 150 miles east of Omaha. So this is quite literally close to home for me. (I suppose its actually possible that at least a portion of my electricity is provided by one or both of these plants at times.) [Edit 1 times, last edit by AnnieKenes at Jun 22, 2011 11:49:30 AM] |

It amazes me that it took 3 pages of posts before anyone thought to check the LOCAL news for the real story. I live just outside Omaha, and while this is one of several situations being watched because of the flooding, it is a none issue.
First, as was already mentioned, the plant has been completely offline since April for refueling, not for anything flood related. Second, there was a fire that knocked out power to the cooling pool for about 90 minutes. According to the regulatory people, it would have taken at least 40 HOURS before the water in the pool reached the boiling point, and some time after that before things got critical. In the event that flooding grows worse (and it probably will), there are generators and enough fuel already in place to provide backup power to the systems for nearly 2 months. All of this information has been readily available on all Omaha area news sites--KETV, WOWT, etc. As for the levees, they are still a concern for many in this area. I'm not sure where the idea came from that the levees are failing without warning as this is not the case. All levees from South Dakota to Missouri are being monitored, and those that have failed did so only AFTER the area residents had been warned to evacuate. Not trying to stir up any trouble here; just want to make sure the right story is being told. |

Bottom line, bad news sells whether it's based in fact or fiction. Thanks for setting the record straight.

Here's a link that tries to uncover how the scary Internet stories about Fort Calhoun arose:
