@ adamhill1988 Welcome to the UK team and to the forum!
---------------------------------------- I get just as confused as you on hardware options! The regulars in this thread are pretty friendly (& knowledgeable) and will pitch in with advice on possible configurations.I've had a couple different user names Pardon my curiosity but is dweymes1994 one of your alter egos?---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Sep 6, 2012 9:37:08 AM] |

@ gordoma & themoonscrescent
----------------------------------------It seems you're not alone in having problems with yesterday's HCC GPU test! No doubt the techs are tweaking the code in line with some masterplan - they just haven't said what that is! ![]() |

@ adamhill1988: Welcome to the teams forum
---------------------------------------- others may say I'm wrong, but I'm also looking for a new system and have been for a while. 1) The cheapest system I've found with an I7 (please don't take this as a recomendation of the company itself, as I have not purchased from them and therefore don't know what their like as a company), is with puterz.co.uk (Zoostorm got quite a bad independent review over build quality, bad case and general noise, so I discount them), but for £500ish, the best you'll get is an I5. An I7 2600K is a Quad core with Hyperthreading, meaning Boinc can run 8 work units at anyone time, which is why they get more points. 2) Quads "should"?? get you more points over dual cores due to 4 work units being processed at anyone time, rather than 2 work units, that said, everything I have heard about the AMD Bulldozer leads me to believe that the Bulldozer's are only comparative against an I5, it's nowhere near the I7 (even the FX x8), but I've also heard that they run Very Hot, so extra cooling may have to be added. If you prefer AMD over Intel, I've read several times that the older Phenom II (up to x6 cores), still out performs the FX Bulldozer, but you may end up building the system yourself as I don't know of any company that that sells PC's with the Phenom II? For your budget, I would say that an I5 would do you proud (hoping that AMD's next CPU release is better, so as to start forcing Intel to reduce their prices, I7's are more expensive now than ever ).Hope that makes sense (multiple edits due to tiredness). ![]() ![]() [Edit 4 times, last edit by themoonscrescent at Sep 6, 2012 10:10:21 AM] |

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-i7-2600K-3-4G...s&hash=item53ebe04f2e
----------------------------------------2600k + Mobo and Ram for £305, I have all the other bits needed to make a system up so that would leave £200 for a graphics card. However I fail to see how this would out preform say 4x AMD Bulldozer FX 4100 3.6Ghz Quad Core at around the same cost |

Perhaps you want to google the seller evisage solutions ltd before purchasing, I did which is why I haven't bought from them, also didn't realise you where after Bundles, thought you were talking complete base unit only PC's.
----------------------------------------It out performs due to working on 8 work units at once rather than 4 (assuming 10 points per work unit, 4x10 is 40 (AMD) : 8x10 =80 (Intel I7)). ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by themoonscrescent at Sep 6, 2012 10:46:35 AM] |

99.8% positive so i dont see a problem there. Yes im no stranger to building PC's. If I go for the multiple systems It will probably be made in some sort of crazy custom case. Like this http://helmer.sfe.se/. Either way it will no doubt be DIY built rather than store bought.

GPU would be for future consideration of WCG, there isn't any GPU work at the moment, thats not to say that they can't be put to good use on other grids though

Hi Adam,
----------------------------------------If it was me, I would aim for as many cores/threads as possible rather than clock speed. I have a 2.8gz i7 as my main machine, when I got the system a couple of years ago it was the fastest I could afford so when run on full tilt that's 8 units crunching at the same time. (A few years back on another crunching project, the laptop I had was slower than my tower but would crunch a unit faster, but it was only a single core laptop whereas the tower was dual core so the tower produced more results) The other thing I would recommend looking into would be the cpu cooling. My i7 has an all-in-one water cooling system, can't remember which one but it's similar to this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/thermaltake-cl...one-liquid-cooling-system to replace the stock fan. It keeps mine at around 40C even when running flat out. (My other half has a Zoostorm laptop which apart from the fact that the battery has given up after several years of use, she's still very happy with it. But I did have a dual-core tower from them which was fine apart from the case which was poor. It vibrated all the time so that it was very far from quiet. I tried tightening or loosening various chassis screws to try to reduce the vibration but the only thing that really worked was placing a heavy object on top of the case! Dampened almost all the noise.) Regards, GH ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by genhos at Sep 6, 2012 12:21:13 PM] |
