For hardware, I've always used Scan Computers, and never had a single issue with them (even on the occasional component I've had to take back).
----------------------------------------Have a look here for their mobo/CPU/RAM bundles: http://3xs.scan.co.uk/Category.asp?SystemMasterCategoryID=38 ![]() |

just found this
----------------------------------------http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-ProLiant-DL585-G...s&hash=item20ca0a1b8c £540 for a 16 core server, only 2.5ghz but still thats got to be more cost effective. |

Like you Thargor, I've found Scan to be pretty good. My current tower is a home build with parts from them.
----------------------------------------Do like my i7 930, trundles along like a good 'un. Which phenom chip is that for 12 cores? The only 3.4ghz Phenom I found was the Phenom II X4 965 quad-core Crikey 16 cores. Should be able to crunch a pretty well I would have thought. Wonder what the power consumption would be on that server? And hopefully will be able to keep itself nice and cool if all cores are at 100% |

Can you estimate how long it will be before I loose no. 1 position within the team based on Augusts average performance? @ crooks_uk Only 2 members are in a position to challenge based on August's crunching: Runtime dmc_1970 590 days Thargor . 1098 days Points dmc_1970 139 days Thargor . 339 days In Results your position appears unassailable with the closest challenge from dmc_1970 only amounting to 53.6% of your total for the month. Many thanks for the stats jonnieb-uk. Much appreciated. Best start saving for some new hardware!! Excellent performance from dmc_1970 and Thargor!

Best start saving for some new hardware!! Excellent performance from dmc_1970 and Thargor! dmc's doing a great job of beating my crunching-levels, I'd best start saving for some new hardware, too! ![]() ![]() |

yeah the 965
----------------------------------------http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ASRock-960GM-GS3-AM...s&hash=item20c51ae915 £150 processor motherboard and ram probably get it slightly cheaper than that but thats a good ball park figure. Also probably better togo for the 955 as its almost exactly the same but cheaper. I'm liking the 2nd hand proper server idea. They are designed to run 100% all day long for years on end without any maintenance. Thats the whole point to "proper" server hardware. |

I'm liking the 2nd hand proper server idea. it's very compelling. I don't have anywhere at home I can run that sort of thing because of the noise. Might see if I can "borrow" a couple of u in the comms room at work ;-) |

It does seem a good price for a quad core 3.4ghz cpu bundle. With a quick skeg on the net, some people say the i7s are better for crunching while others have said their AMDs are better. Benchmark sites don't seem to be any clearer either!
----------------------------------------http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php has the X4 955 and 965 as a lower benchmark than the i7 930, but then again I don't know how that benchmark compares to the crunching output for BOINC. Aaaargh! Choices choices! |
