Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 37 smilesmile

Just to clarify, I haven't quit the team. I've just moved all my non-WCG resources to XtremeSystems. My WCG contributions stay here (laptop).

That is great to hear. I appreciate you making that clear. Now I wish DM would reappear! It is not the same without him either.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 37 smilesmile

I will probably not be here for stats tonight. I am really not well. I may be back in through the night.

Dave, you most DEFINITELY take care of yourself first. We'll be okay here. We want you around here for a long time to go still!

Get well soon..! That's an order! devilish

Dr. Mike..

Take care buddy and get well soon!

At this point, 4 AM, feeling quite a bit better. Pain has subsided. Going t reconsider later if I need to go to ER or if I can wait until appointment on Monday. Thanks for all the good thoughts.

For me, even if I want to buy an i7, I don't know where to buy it, and how i should "outfit" it.. it creates a lot of disarray and anxiety.. sigh..

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 37 smilesmile

It is confusing. Not only do you have to think about the computers themselves, you also have to think about the electricity and heat, space to put them, monitors, KVMs, Operating Systems, routers and ...

I know there are a lot of guys here that like to build their own but I just like to get prebuilt machines that are in the "sweet spot" on the price/performance curve. While there are faster computers than the i7 920s now, their price is much higher and there are cheaper computers but their BOINC througput is much lower.

Of course the sweet spot will move soon..but that is always the case. straight face

I have been lucky enough to have been given several computers and bought a few and if i had the cash i spent on this i could buy four of the cheap i7s and probably be putting out more than when running all my machines. But i got hooked when my wife got sick so here i am.I am trying that GPU crap but cant seem to get it right--the points are nice but thats NOT the reason im here and for the long run!!!We do have the greatest crunchers some come and some go and MOT is still here

smile Hi Gerald smile I am glad that you are still here and that the point chasing-to-the-detriment-of-problem-solving gremlin has not got you. wink
I am soooo tempted to order another one of these. But the doghouse is unbearably hot this time of year.
I have been thinking that before too long I should have half as many MOT points as you biggrin

Doc. Mike, if you still want to get another desktop machine, I think you'd do well to get the Dell machine RT links to. $750 for a decent i7 machine is a good deal. As linked by RT, that has Vista Home Premium. If I was buying, I'd see if I could get Vista Business (not Ultimate). In XP terms, that would be getting XP Pro versus XP Home. Just a personal preference. My impression is that the "business-oriented" versions of the OS are better. The Home versions seem geared to multimedia stuff, which is probably fine if what you really want to use the machine for is digital pix, video and music. Also, you'll need to get a monitor OR tie into your existing setup with a KVM. If you get a monitor, go to Tiget Direct and get a 17 or 19 inch ACER. Should be under $200 easy. I really like mine and they came well recommended to me. You'll also need speakers for the Dell. If you don't have that, grab a pair at Best Buy or Radio Shack. Shouldn't be much for that if you aren't an audiophile. Haven't looked at what Lenovo has but I suspect this would be tough to beat.

Edit: Oh, see how much more it would be to take the one year warranty to three years. Most likely worth the incremental cost. In-home is the way to go for desktops though if they differentiate between 24x7 vs. M-F 9-5, the 24x7 is probably not worth the extra cost. If you need help finding what you want to change, if anything, on their site, try the online chat they have. I think you should easily be able to end up with a nice i7 box for under a $1000 and that's assuming you get a monitor and such. Also, this weekend here in Georgia is a sales tax holiday on a lot of "back to school" stuff, which normally includes most computers so Missouri may have that too. Could save you $50-75.
