my problem is how to outfit a computer once I find a link like the one RT sent.. how much memory I need wireless networking card? there are so many more options it gets frustrating.. Mike.. If you are going to use it for crunching only, the 3Gigs it comes with is fine. Wireless? How are your other computers hooked up? If you have a router, you can simply plug this puppy in with an ethernet cable. I have my house wired for that. If you are just crunching, just take the defaults on this 749 machine. That is the way I ordered my last i7 (I think identical to this one). I used it for a while on a KVM switch and had an old keyboard, Flatpanel and mouse hooked up to it for a while but then I installed Windows 7 RC on it and it now sits on top of the Freezer in the Laundry room. I reach it through Remote Desktop Connect from my Vista Ultimate Machine. It never has had any speakers and only the one DVD drive. No floppy or card reader..just the default 749 machine with BOINC downloaded from WCG. ![]() Edit>If you need a display, see Keith's posting above. It comes with a keyboard and mouse and that is all you need...persuming you have a router and cable to hook via ethernet ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Jul 29, 2009 11:09:59 PM] |

Mike.. OK. well you can go either way on this..either get a wireless card in the machine or if you are going to place it close enough, just run a ethernet cable from the new machine into the router. Now, as to the Keyboard/Video/Mouse issue, You can order a display from dell with the computer or get the one Keith is talking about (likely a better deal but you never know with "specials" they sometimes run. The keyboard and mouse are included on the 749 machine. And there you go. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Jul 29, 2009 11:18:30 PM] |

The keyboard and mouse are included on the 749 machine. And there you go. Mike, if you look at this machine with Dell, check on the number of available expansion slots it has. If it does not already come with a wireless card, you can pick one up at any decent computer store for $40-60. You just open the cover on the machine and plug the card in one of the expansion slots that it fits it. The card should come with a CD with drivers in case you need one. When I got my daughter's desktop, I added the wireless adapter card. The install wizard on the CD installed the driver and then I just had to set up the wireless connection just like you do on any new machine (and which you have already doen before on your other machines). If you can, see if there is a second expansion slot so you can add a GPU card in time. You could ask Dell about the existing video card and your options to add the Nvidia later. They may even have an upgrade option now that might be worth it. As for the monitor, I got the Acer model X203W (LCD monitor) from Tiger. Really like it. It should be a 19 inch. Nice size - not too big and not too small. Edit: This machine had 3GB of decent memory. You generally want at least 2GB in any machine these days you want for crunching. To use beyond 4GB, you have to run the 64bit Windows. The hard drive was 500 GB. That should be plenty unless you get big into audio/video/pix and such. Something tells me you'd have a rough time buying a new car - which model, which options, etc. There's some similarities ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Jul 30, 2009 2:33:54 AM] |

Do you think MOT needs a forum of it's own? I've seen the website, can it host a small forum?
----------------------------------------It will be a lot easier to discuss different topics, whether about crunching, WCG, GPUs, fun stuff or anything else of interest. Just a suggestion. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well, today I am heading to the ER. It looks like I have cellulitis and stasis dermatitis as well. I may find other issues relating to my COPD but am not sure. Hopefully they will not keep me, but I am packing because I think they may. Will say something later if I am home.
