Re: An OSX bug

Hi Bearcat,
All that I know is that our programmers are devoting the rest of this month to debugging our current projects. What this means for any particular bug . . . . I just don't know.

Re: An OSX bug

The bug I am refering to is the constant crashes on macs. Whatever got changes 6-7 months ago started it. When I started a year ago, I never had any crashes. Thanks for the reply.

Re: An OSX bug

Hi Bearcat,

If you will,

1. Step back to the release you record as being stable (5.4.9. you wrote). Any previous version can still be obtained. Prior do a full uninstall which is admittedly rather cumbersome on MAC.
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ReleaseNotes#uninstall-mac

2. Select 1 by 1 the science in your profile to determine which of the 4 widely available to MAC are causing this (all or a specific?). Let each run for a day or 2 to make sure its not an rarer science condition causing the crash.

3. Is it also with any none WCG projects? A lite one to test is e.g. Malariacontrol.net. http://www.malariacontrol.net/. Is CPDN still doing fine on that machine?

On the BOINC dev forum there is lots of discussion over MAC not adhering to pausing or pausing and not reviving and more.... the development has progressed to version 5.10.38.

Reading back you say that your mac mini is fine and only the mac pro crashing. "all wu's are crashing", but do they still? Also you report harddrive falling asleep. Why would BOINC or a science be the source of that? Please tell us again the specifics of what you wrote "I stopped crunching until the bug got fixed." What is/are *your* bug(s)?

Without some digging and expanded feedback on your part it's hard to resolve. There's only one MAC and few people in the lab. Those lab machines usually run the projects if not used for developing and testing new project sciences.

Thanks in advance for helping diagnose the source.

cheers

Added: Also see you run 10.5.1 Leopard. In one post you report the problem as 7 months going and another 4 months. Any relation there in upgrading from Tiger?

Re: An OSX bug

Sekerob, this is a long-standing problem and it has been discussed and troubleshooted extensively in the past.

Charlie Fenton commented on the problem too, but no solution was found. Only certain projects are affected, but it is unclear whether the bug is in the project code or the BOINC code.

Re: An OSX bug

When I started about a year ago, forgot what version I was using but an early one, everything was smooth. Worked on the mac mini and the imac. Upgraded one level, no problems. Around july or august, started to see little glitches. Error messages, once in awhile freezes etc.. Around september, the freezes started more and more. As time went on, the most freezes on WU's, error messages etc.. This is done on Mac Tiger. Also, removed the mini for the mac pro with tiger around july. No problems until around september, the problems began on the pro. Stopped using the imac around september too and concentrated on the mac pro.
When leopard came out, tried that but immediate errors. Went back to tiger. Errors messages, freezes, and stuck WU's. This in all projects.
Decided to shut it down. But then decided to try another project so went to climate prediction. Zero problems. Runs smooth as a babys rear end.
My guess is the WU's at WCG changed around september. Am not a programmer so have no idea what has happened.
I will come back to WCG when I hear the bugs are fixed as to why so many crashes, errors and stuck WU's. Until then, I will stay at climate prediction.

Re: An OSX bug

Forgot to mention, I did try to go back to 5.4.9. Still the same problems. I did go and delete every file related to boinc before reinstalling but still didn't work. Not sure if you can talk with the programmers to ask if they changed something in the coding around august or september. That seems to be the time when problems began.

Re: An OSX bug

Interesting. I have never had problems with my 2 MacBook Pros. One is a 2.0 ghz the other is a newer 2.2 ghz. Both running 10.5.1....looks like a new version of Boinc just was added and I will install that was on 5.10.30 now going to 5.10.38
