Re: An OSX bug

I had one stall on my PowerMac quad last night, so that makes it three different machines, both intel and PPC.

We learn little if it is not specified which tasks DO cause the hangs.

DDDT, some seem to incur this but reports are sparse
HCC, had its first launch on Mac last week, so is this doing it?
FAAH known to be absolutely rock solid
HPF2, is known to crunch on without progress and can be restarted and on resume will usually pick up and finish at last checkpoint.

Okay, I will start noting down the sub-project, and wether quitting/restarting BOINC solves it.

I can tell you this much, I am not currently running any HCC (due to that other issue), so HCC is definitely not the cause, at least for the stalls on my machines.

Re: An OSX bug

Okay, just had another happen on a fourth machine, this one a Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo), MacBook Pro (Intel). Quitting/Starting BOINC solved the problem. I *think* it was showing ~70% when frozen, and definately was showing about 84% when restarted.

Re: An OSX bug

Ok, tonight I checked the Boinc client and it was stalled. One FAAH 5.42 unit complete and "Ready to Report". The task name is "faah2767_NSC119886_xmd00390_01_0.

Another FAAH 5.42 task frozen at 34.804% named "faah2755_JEDI_CH3andBr_replacedCH3_xmod09670_03_1"

Shutdown and restart the Boinc client and there was no change to the progress of the task. Actually, after 30 secs or so it went backwards a little and then starts progressing again. This is typically what I have seen when restarting after a stall.

Hello ecirwin,
Actually, after 30 secs or so it went backwards a little and then starts progressing again. This is typically what I have seen when restarting after a stall.

This is normal. It starts off showing the last progress percentage (I think it is in a XML file) but starts computing at the last checkpoint. After a while it recomputes the progress percentage which is typically less than it started with.

Re: An OSX bug

Mac users need to report if running Tiger or Leopard. Latter may now be Unix certified, but is not exactly crash proof at this time.

Just trying to be clear on what is happening. I read some other posts in this thread that said there was progress even after the task appeared to be frozen.

Hello ecirwin,
Just trying to be clear on what is happening.

I apologize if my post seemed too abrupt. We need all the help we can get to identify the problems we are having. Thanks for reporting all your observations.
