Re: An OSX bug

I have another stall tonight, again with FAAH 5.42. This time it stalled at 78.088%.

Again, this is on an iMac G5 2GHz with 1.5MB RAM running 10.4.11 and Boinc 5.10.29.

Re: An OSX bug

Well, it hung again.
I have had the same thing in the last couple of days on an Intel Core Duo iMac running DDD on Boinc 5.10.30 It happening twice so far. I just starting running this Boinc project this week. I am on Mac OSX 10.4.11

Re: An OSX bug

If anyone wants to spend some time on this problem, I will repeat Charlie Fenton's advice (he's the BOINC Mac developer):
There are a number of tools for debugging this:
  • use ps from the command line with the -M option to view the cpu time of each thread.
  • use /Applications/Utilities/Activity monitor to view the application's CPU usage
  • use Shark (installed with the CHUD tools from the OS X install DVD to get a stack trace of each thread and see where it is spending its time
  • attach to the application with gdb when the application is hung

Re: An OSX bug

Another one:

10.4 (Tiger)
G4 (PPC)
faah2769_NSC119911_xmd16470_00
o Frozen at 8:16:38 CPU time; 67.584% complete (yes, this is a slow computer)
o Quit/Start of BOINC solved the problem
o 8:04:50 CPU time; 67.584% complete, after the restart.

I'll try those other things next time.

Re: An OSX bug

Another stall today with FAAH 5.42 @ 9.394%.

Looked at the Activity Monitor and wcg_faah_autodoc is running 80-90%.

typed in "ps -M" into terminal and got the following:
USER PID TT %CPU STAT PRI STIME UTIME COMMAND
xxxxxx 12742 p1 0.0 S 31 0:00.08 0:00.01 -tcsh

not sure that tells you anything, maybe I'm missing something.

Why is it so hard to fix this problem?
All Charlie Fenton would have to do is run any project (as far as I know) here at WCG for a day or two and he could see the problem for himself?? Most of us are not developers so we are limited in ability to help.
Is WCG working on this problem? Can we get an update from one of the admins on this?

Re: An OSX bug

Hello brinktastee,
As far as I know, the staff intend to work on the Mac version of HCC once they have the Linux version running. They are also working on ACAH on Windows, which has some problems. Recently they looked into the difference between results on Leopard vs older versions, but could not come up with a fix.

Maybe they will do some investigation while working on Mac HCC, but I have not heard any specifics. They have a long list of bugs to track down.

Re: An OSX bug

We are working on the problem and will be testing a fix in beta soon. A couple of questions. Are HCC workunits freezing as well? Is there one application that this seems to occur more with?

Thanks,
armstrdj

Re: An OSX bug

I was exclusively running DDDT and at times it would stop 4 or 5 times a day per processor. Now that DDDT is not running at the moment I can do other work and report on the results.

By the way, are you new here at WCG? I noticed only 10 posts.
Welcome. smile

Definitely happens with FAAH.
