If you are a graduate student working on string theory, then the field
will be dead by the time you get your Ph.D.; Even worse, if you start over with a new thesis topic, the new field will also be dead by the time you get your Ph.D.

If it looks good,
And it taste good,
And it feels good,
There has got to be something wrong some where,

Re: Murphy's laws and corollaries

If there are two or more ways to do something, and one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then someone will do it.” This is a principle of defensive design, cited here because it is usually given in mutant forms less descriptive of the challenges of design for lusers. For example, you don't make a two-pin plug symmetrical and then label it “THIS WAY UP”; if it matters which way it is plugged in, then you make the design asymmetrical

It was not the apple on the tree but the pair on the ground that caused the trouble in the garden
