Re: Welcome all Grid.org Refugees to WCG!!

Courine and other energy savers, next time you're changing your kitchen, consider an Induction Cooktop.
'
Interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_cooker

All of the saved energy will go to manufacturing ferromagnetic cookware that will work on it.

Toss out your aluminum. Toss out your ceramic. Toss out your regular stainless steel. Toss out your copperware. Toss out your Pyrex glassware.

It apparently works with your grandma's cast iron stuff. You still have some of that, don't you? Ferromagnetic stainless steel will work.

...just checked the price. The wife will stick to other plans:
At a price of $3,995 the 5 burner 36-inch Diva DDP-5 is at the upper end of the appliance price spectrum, but if you can afford it, you won't find a better cooktop anywhere else on the planet.

Flat "No!" with no consideration? Even after reading Wikipedia?
Strange reaction in this century, retsof.

We all jumped to get Microwave Ovens and the 1st were not cheap.

I've cooked with induction for 21 years.
I'm using my 3rd induction cooktop. (Home relocations)
This is a Sears Induction Cooktop and it's the best of the 3.
(First 2 were GE - the 1st was made by Panasonic, I don't know who made the 2nd.)

The cookware doesn't have to be expensive.
I've bought excellent cookware at Marshall's. (You just need to carry a small magnet!)

I look at the hot cook tops as a terrible energy waste.
No one thinks that heating the kitchen, while cooking food is efficient.
Induction cooking is more accepted among Orientals who are happy to skip over an obsolete idea if there is something better.
In Japan, a large percentage of rice cookers are powered by induction heating
~ Interestingly, some Japanese electronics giants only sell domestically.
Wikipedia.

Maybe Mrs. retsof would like to have a say in it herself!

That's what light bulbs are for --- 90% efficient at heating. They are the baking element in E-Z-Bake ovens.

I can understand why, since few U.S. residents eat that much rice. In Hawaii, where they do, it is sold in 50 pound bags.

The first item cooked in a microwave by mistake: a chocolate bar.
The first item cooked in a microwave on purpose: popcorn

That WAS her say, based on info to date. My first search on induction cooktops brought up the expensive one. Now, if I could only get used to shopping at Sears. I haven't had much luck with that chain.

Sears has gone even cheaper, with a Kenmore induction unit that costs $1500
Still pricey.

Induction cooking is more accepted among Orientals who are happy to skip over an obsolete idea if there is something better.

"Samurai Delicatessen" January 17, 1976 - Mr. Dantley (host Buck Henry) waits as The Samurai makes a sandwich by severing ropes on hanging salami, slicing tomatoes in midair, and splitting bread with his skull while apparently carrying on a pleasant conversation despite it being in two separate languages.

Chuckling, retsof .
Don't think I don't feel the same about Sears!

But I needed an induction cooktop very bady at the time.
Fortuitous that they came out with one when I needed it. @1799 at that time.
If Mr. thefirst were awake, I would ask him who actually made my cooktop.

I assure you it wasn't Sears.
I think they did make the terrible riding lawn mower that they sold us 30 years ago which made for our permanent breakup with Sears..........
.....until we were desperate for an induction cooktop.

I have put a post in Team ch@CDOS(Japanese) to ask for replies to use of ic.

Those boys don't lag behind technology!
Not implying that you do, retsof.

Just caught your pix. Perfect!
Those days are gone forever.

Wife's SECOND answer: "If I paid that much for a stove, I couldn't afford to cook anything on it."

That would be Sears' answer for a portable cooktop: a riding ELECTRIC lawn mower containing a cooktop and a power cord.

Saturday Night Live went after them with Try-Hard pacemaker batteries. "Picks up where your heart left off".

That also goes back to more Saturday Night Live combination uses:

75i: Elliot Gould / Anne Murray

Shimmer

Wife.....Gilda Radner
Husband.....Dan Aykroyd
Spokesman.....Chevy Chase

[ open on suburban kitchen, Wife and Husband arguing ]

Wife: New Shimmer is a floor wax!

Husband: No, new Shimmer is a dessert topping!

Wife: It's a floor wax!

Husband: It's a dessert topping!

Wife: It's a floor wax, I'm telling you!

Husband: It's a dessert topping, you cow!

Spokesman: [ enters quickly ] Hey, hey, hey, calm down, you two. New Shimmer is both a floor wax and a dessert topping! Here, I'll spray some on your mop.. [ sprays Shimmer onto mop ] ..and some on your butterscotch pudding. [ sprays Shimmer onto pudding ]

[ Husband eats while Wife mops ]

Husband: Mmmmm, tastes terrific!

Wife: And just look at that shine! But will it last?

Spokesman: Hey, outlasts every other leading floor wax, 2 to 1. It's durable, and it's scuff-resistant.

Husband: And it's delicious!

Spokesman: Sure is! Perks up anything from an ice cream sundae to a pumpkin pie!

Wife: Made from an exclusive non-yellowing formula.

Husband: I haven't even touched my pudding and I'm ready for more!

Wife: But what about black heel marks?

Spokesman: Dirt, grime, even black heel marks, wipe clean with a damp mop.

[ Husband accidentally sprays Shimmer onto the floor ]

Husband: Oh, sorry, honey, I'll clean that up!

Wife: Oh, no problem, sweetheart, not with new Shimmer!

[ Spokesman laughs continuously as he approaches the camera ]

Spokesman: New Shimmer, for the greatest shine you ever tasted!

[ fade ]

Not implying that you do, retsof
Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. The primary line phone in the computer room (which uses the 2nd line) has a dial on it. It's very good for NOT pressing 1 if you are being robbed, press 2 if your house is on fire, press 3 if you want Russian or Serbo-Croatian

After all, the phone company still charges EXTRA for touch-tone after all of these years, which is simpler technology. In July, 2006 they finally got rid of the 3% Federal Excise tax put in place to pay for the Spanish-American War. Other fees were piled on, including reimbursement for a tax that doesn't start for another year. The Honolulu Phone Company wanted to charge extra for "new" equipment, until a newspaper reporter found out that it was stuff that San Francisco was throwing away. I was also there when the speed limit was reduced to 55 MPH to save energy. Hawaii had to RAISE the speed limit on the H-1 "Interstate", which was only 50 MPH at the time.

Grump mode: In 1992 I applied for a job at the office of the Attorney General of Texas. They wanted all post college experience to be with personal computers. I asked them what I was supposed to have done for eight years UNTIL THE PERSONAL COMPUTER WAS INVENTED??!!!?!!!?? tongue
Can you say "age discrimination"? I knew you could. I still have the job description notice.

Lawyers: Can't sue 'em. Can't eat 'em. Just throw 'em back.

Still ahead but I think this will be the very last day I'll be able to turn my head and look backwards. Maybe he'll catch me tomorrow but I don't think it will take that long.

Oh well. It was good while it lasted.
