I don't know how the rest of you feel but I am getting all too tired of the rudeness, personal attacks and flaming that occurs in these forums. It seems if we can manage a month without some dowright mean flamewar, it's almost as much cause for celebration as some of the records we're setting. Invariably, it seems we can count on at least one a month. The CA's don't and apparently can't do much about it (presuming they don't contribute to it). I have seen more than enough crunchers quit WCG because of this problem. The WCG admins have far more important things to spend their time on than playing nursemaid to a small number of xxxxxxxxxx - uh xxxxxxxxxxxxx - uh folks that won't follow the rules and behave. Something needs to be done. What goes on in these forums is far more visible that most of us realize and harms WCG just as greatly. It also reflects on all of us and I particularly don't care for that. If I'm going to look like a fool, I'll do that myself thank you. I can't in good concious encourge others I know to get involved in WCG with this kind of misbehavior going on regularly. It bothers me that standing up to these xxxxxxxxxx - uh xxxxxxxxxxxxx - uh folks that won't follow the rules and behave may smack of vigilanteism but I find it difficult to stand by and watch them tear down what so many of us have worked so hard to build up. I think we of the usually silent majority need to stand up to those who flout the rules we agree to follow. There is a process in place for reporting such problems but I think it's time for the rest of us to commit ourselves to being vocal and using that process in bulk. Anyone who repeated violates the rules here should not be allowed to post here. The rules are by no means onerous or highly restrictive. Basic civility is all that is really required to comply with them. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone but it is not that difficult to do so respectfully.
----------------------------------------I'm open to suggestions, thoughts and comments but we clearly need to do something. |

Which recent threads have flame wars? Can you link to them?

Keith:
----------------------------------------I agree with you totally. I want a civil, friendly forum as much as anyone. I also want a way to communicate with someone running the project at IBM and not with just a well meaning volunteer who has no authority and even less information at his disposal. There are issues that need to be resolved and from what I can see there is no reasonable way to contact anyone with any decision making powers. Thanks. ![]() |

Keith, I hope it comes as no surprise to you, but I am also in agreement - and on a personal level I had already sent emails up the chain regarding some of those posts in threads you refer to recently and thankfully action was eventually taken, but not quickly enough for my liking.
----------------------------------------Perhaps if your suggestion of more members complaining on bulk is taken up, then action may be taken quicker in the future. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 13, 2006 10:41:47 PM] |

The CA's don't Hey come on Keith do you honestly think that I as a CA don't try to keep this place as wholesome as possible. I have tirelessly campaigned both in the public forum and in the behind the scenes forum with IBM to be able to do something about the flame wars and the verbal abuse that goes on in here. So far no one will assist I gave it my best shot this weekend and the whole potentially volatile issue of points was conducted in a more or less civil manner in just one thread instead of the usual random outbreaks - Lots has been done recently and IBM have finally equipped themselves with a toolkit to deal with such outbreaks But as I have said behind the scenes as a CA I am sent out to the forum armed only with my wit. I have been granted no more power than the additional ability to be usually ignored in the Community Advisors Discussion Forum. I have campaigned since day 1 for more communication from IBM and I will keep on doing so until IBM finally understand their full responsibility to the crunchers who meet in this forum. I'm a bit cheesed off with the slur but Keith you are forgiven ![]() (my the's get all adrift when I'm annoyed I've had to go back and tidy them up ) Dave ![]() |

They should be singing haleyulahs(sp?) that they have some of the good volunteers that they have here but I think they take them for granted. ![]() |

Thanks Movieman I've tried
----------------------------------------But I don't think it would make a great deal of difference if I threw in the CA towel and joined back in with the likes of Keith and the rest of the committed crew trying to make a difference. I'm just keeping schtum until I see what unfolds over the next couple of days. Dave ![]() |

Who is a volunteer and who works for IBM? I'm seeing some scary things happening with this last change in the system and wondering who I should be taking these concerns to. Thanks. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Nov 14, 2006 12:20:24 AM] |

Truth of the matter seems to be that you or your fellow CA's really can't do much of anything to really address this sort of problem. You can't zap/edit/etc. the offending posts nor can you do anything relative to the offender aside from complaining to the WCG admins like us trench dwellers. Unfortunately, it's especially sad when, intentional or not, a peer contributes to the problem. I have to wonder how, back when the CA's had a separate username for that purpose, no one chose Sisyphus. ![]() |
