As we approach WCG's 2nd birthday, what improvements do you want to see?

I'm thinking mostly in terms of how the whole crunching thing operates, but suggestions about the forums will be fine too.

Please avoid the subject of credit. As hopefully everyone knows now, WCG are actively working on improving that situation right now. If you do have suggestions on that subject, please head over to the BOINC credit thread, where these issues are being exhaustively (and exhaustingly) discussed. ;-)

Don't be afraid of mentioning something that may have been suggested before. If it hasn't happened, then maybe a reminder is needed.

I'd still like to see the top candidates/predictions! biggrin

It's still a good suggestion, but this will need to be provided by the project scientists. Can you give more detail about what you would like to see? A better progress indication is on the list, better updates as well. But you seem to want a window into the science as it is happening.

If it's possible to do, it will be a great feature.

Re: As we approach WCG's 2nd birthday, what improvements do you want to see?

Yes basically we could do this on both FAAH and HPF2. I'm very interested in the science behind both of these (pre-med here) so seeing compounds/structures really piques my interest & I think it would make others feel "more involved" (especially if top candidates/predictions were tagged to user names - more competition!)

---FAAH. We could do it historically or actively. Historically, we could show the top candidates from previous phases (20, 50, 100, 500, whatever - lowest docking energies) somewhere on the WCG website. Compounds would be shown as 3D structures with corresponding lowest docking energy & docking time (that's probably the ONLY thing I liked about grid.org/UD; seeing the 3D structure for every compound being docked). Actively, the compounds have lowest energy with respect to each other in the current phase, so the website could be updated as results are returned with the lowest-scoring compounds. Check out D2OL's "Top Drug Candidates" page to see what I mean. It shows the 3D of the compound and the name of it: http://app.d2ol.com/stats/topCandidates.jsp (or if there are serious concerns about users aborting higher energy dockings, only show the compounds & don't show what the energy was or what the threshold is)

---HPF2. We do not have RSMDs for these structures (because there is no known crystalline structure; otherwise we wouldn't be predicting it). We do, however, end up with a few (I think Rosetta@Home uses about 7-10) lowest energy structures for every single protein predicted. It would be VERY cool to see at least one of these structures for various proteins we fold. (Similar to Rosetta@Home's "Top Predictions" page, but there is no RSMD: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_top_predictions.php - the older predictions give a better picture of what i mean; picture the graph without RSMD and just the "lowenergy.pdb" structure: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_top_predictions_old.php )

Just a few thoughts peace

Re: As we approach WCG's 2nd birthday, what improvements do you want to see?

Hi Eso,

I think someone asked for that before to be shown here and a concern, some would resort to not completing WU's if the graph in progress was not going near the optimal....... personally i think we can count those members on 1 finger, but we can always table it again. The system would start to identify error generators and soon stop sending work.

cheers

Hi Sekerob,

I agree that very few members would actually do that. I don't think we should abandon this idea because of a few rogue crunchers - there are checks & balances in place as you mentioned (quorum and identifying users who consistently abort WUs). I don't think we should make rules based on the exceptions (don't throw out the bushel for a few bad apples). smile

Re: As we approach WCG's 2nd birthday, what improvements do you want to see?

I understand the security needs for keeping users' email addresses confidential; still, there is some justification for enabling some means of contact between at least a team captain and members of his team. I'd like to see a feature whereby a team captain could send a message indirectly to a team member through the WCG. The WCG could, in turn, add a small message of its own -- something like this:

"You are currently listed as a member of the 'XYZ' team, and its captain has asked us to forward the following message to you; your email address has not been, and will not be, released. Rather, we are forwarding this message to you at the request of said captain. If you prefer to never receive any further emails from us in this manner, click HERE. The captains message is as follows:*************
Captain's message
*************************************** "

The reason I think this is important is that I have noticed a number of folks who have quit generating points, and they may be unaware of it and there might merely be some problem that they are having that the captain or other team member might be able to help them work out.

Thanks.

Bill Velek
