Meaning from context, my friend, meaning from context.
English does allow for ambiguous syntax, but Sekerob was not ambiguous. Anyway, if anyone is unclear, a request for clarification should solve the problem. If not, Aqua Regis should do the trick. |

Profanity ???
The use of guilt to burden a person for their choice of words. To copulate ! That`s fine. To have intercourse ! That`s fine. Even friggin as used earlier in the thread is fine. Howether put four other letters together, there is outrage ! Strange Censorship is a funny game and it changes through the years. 40 years ago homosexuality was profane and one of the biggest sins. The forum does very well considering we all know and use these words a lot more frequently than we do here online. |

No, it's not alright. While nelsoc will remove certain words on sight, please respect the spirit of the rules.
Please try and keep this a suitable place for all ages to read. |

By all means do, I`m just showing that even the person calling for the VFD can be deemed offensive in his choice of language and it`s not alway`s a case of WHAT is written but how we perceive it.
We all live in varied sections of society with our own seperate rules, most unwritten. Bringing thousands together here will undoubtably at times cause some friction and some offence. Hard rules are very difficult to write or even negotiate on, indeed a whole system is based on the clarification of such, the legal system. |

No, it's not alright. While nelsoc will remove certain words on sight, please respect the spirit of the rules. Please try and keep this a suitable place for all ages to read. PC Rides again (said with smile) I hate PC. Leaves many wondering as to the actual intent of the message. Now courtesy is a different issue. If we work from the perspective of understanding that there are many levels of motivation among the different people here and respect and understand that even if someone elses interest or motivation is different from our own it is also worthwhile. So if you have a single PC that runs 4 hours a day or a farm of 4000 that run 24/7, if you do this for just points or in rememberance of a lost loved one or if you just have a feeling of wanting to do something positive to help mankind, all are good and legitimate perspectives as all help the cause. I think it's time we came together and understood one another better. We all want the same thing in the end. As to "nasty" words, I'll agree 100%. Dear Old Dad(passed in 1997) told me once that there's a million ways to say FU and only one of them involves using the word itself. ![]() |

It's not so clear cut and I'm just trying to show it isn't ! carl.h is right, it's not clear cut. And it's that way on purpose, so that World Community Grid can edit whatever it feels falls outside of the rules. This is not a judicial system where previous cases provide arguments for current cases. If I think something is offensive, I will edit it. If someone else thinks something is offensive, they can report it. If I am not sure if something should be edited, I will consult with my colleagues (plural). Even if one of us isn't thinking clearly, 4 or 5 of us will be able to come to an agreement. There is no way to provide anyone with the absolute set of words or phrases that will be edited. As a result, the rules are as they are. I'm sorry that the actions of one person (as I prefer to name names: Dagorath aka Marcel Thibault) have had such a tremendous effect on these forums that people think we really need a whole set of new measures to keep people in line. I agree that the reaction was not as swift nor as forceful as it should have been the first time. But this was the posting of a single member who is now banned from the forums. I don't see this as some sort of major flaw in the forums here. It was the actions of one individual who has been dealt with. Furthermore, measures are in place to ensure more timely response in the future, should such action be necessary. |
