Hello.
----------------------------------------It has been awhile since I have had the time to reply here. A little while back I got my electric and gas bill. In that bill was a notice the utility had files for a rate increase. I already thought they were making enough money, but apparently I was sadly mistaken. I guess the inhabitants of Mahogany Row needed buy another vacation home or extend their vacations in exotic places. At any rate the electric portion of the bill was high enough I decided to let my two servers rest for while. It has been quite a warm winter so the gas portion of the bill looked pretty good, but there was a note that because the heat demand was down they wouldn't be selling as much gas, so they would not be meeting their revenue goals, so they would be considering a raise there also. So even if I am using less gas for heating due to the warm weather i will likely see no reduction in the heat bill. There was also a note about a possible change to the billing structure for reduced rates at night and enhanced pricing for daytime. If that gets implemented, I will be only crunching with most of machines at night. Time will tell. Cheers

My utility, Puget Sound Electric, has raised its rates too and not by a little. Thankfully, I'm on a pilot program with them where I can save money by charging our electric car at night, but after all that we're just paying what we would have been paying under the old price scheme, instead of the new jacked up rates so I have to remind myself that I am saving money.
----------------------------------------I haven't decided yet if I will just crunch at night or not with these new rates. I certainly have been less motivated to run my wife's laptop with the increased costs. I could go on but I will devolve into boring local politics so I will just keep this (sort of) brief. All the best to my fellow crunchers and best of luck with new electric rates and/or availability of WUs.

Speaking of electric rates, I've been living in southern CA for the past few years and the rates are now 0.33c/kwh and 0.43c/kw after the first tier. Basically if you use more than the average household this is the rate they charge.
I'm a big proponent of clean renewable energy, since the energy itself is free, it just needs to be invested in and extracted (solar, wind, geothermal). There is also a place for nuclear for clean baseload generation. Maybe we are paying for the initial infrastructure buildout of these plans, or more for fire mitigation, or more just for the greed of the corporations and management. I think its mostly the latter. Nonetheless, efficiency of crunchers is of utmost importance. I have been trying to stay up on the latest tech as a result. Seems the glory days of running any computer you can get your hands on are pretty much over though. Will still do what we can, with what work units become available. Good day. |

Now that the April 15 has passed, I hope all of you had a good tax filing day.
----------------------------------------Although the supply of work units almost steady now, I see I am getting the "503" error again periodically. Must be some kind of weekend thing. I hope the system stays up this weekend, but given past performance I would not bet hard cash on it. But, hope springs eternal. Winter decided it was not through yet and paid a quick visit this morning. There was a little flurry and I had snow on the windshield. It felt like winter also. 32F(0C) with a good stiff wind this morning. Cheers
