Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yep, back in business now, seems to be picking up steam. Hopefully the new solution they have will be stable and reliable. Will crunch on for the time being. Good day.

Good to hear from you. Probably just like everybody else I am looking for a period of stability and the restart of the Childhood cancer project.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Great to hear from you all as well! I also fired up a couple of crunching rigs after WCG came back online. I have also been seeing a steady stream of work units these past few days, including some of the OPNG work units that utilize graphics cards.

On the hardware front, I forget if I mentioned that I picked up a Geforce RTX 3050 last year after prices became more reasonable and installed it into an older desktop that is ~6 years old with a 240W power supply that has an Intel i7-6700 CPU in it. The RTX 3050 has a low enough power draw that I was just able to squeak by with the existing fairly low wattage power supply. So my two main graphics-capable crunchers are a RTX 3060 TI and the RTX 3050 these days when I have them powered up.

That I7-6700 is no slouch even if it is some years old. With any luck you will be able to keep a full supply of OPNG on those units. So far the consensus is there is not yet enough of the OPNG units to go around. Give it another week and lets see if the supply improves.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It was an interesting weekend. We got about 6 Inches(15cm) of snow with some wind and cooler temperatures below 32F(0C). At least the sun is out today and we will see a warmup. My gravel/dirt driveway had just gotten to the point where it had pretty much dried up and now I will have another few days of mess again. At least the frost has gone out so the ground absorbs the moisture pretty quickly.
When it gets nice again in a few days I will take down the Christmas lights. I hate to do it when it is too cold as then the wires are brittle and tend to crack if now allowed to warm up before winding them on a spool. I had left them plugged into the timer through Easter Sunday but she who is in charge said "Enough !"
Hope all are well.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have a ARM device running Windows. I installed virtual box and it is getting task from all projects. If I look a the details on stats.free-dc, it thinks the computer is "AuthenticAMD Virtual CPU". Looks like with virtual box it doesn't matter the hardware, it just works.

You were spot on, Sgt.Joe. The OPNG units started flowing on April 19th. The past 2 days reminded me of that "stress test" that IBM did back in April of 2021 when they essentially unleashed unlimited OPNG work units and we were pulling in some pretty big numbers as a team. They weren't coming quite that fast this time, but I was just shy of 10 million WCG points yesterday on the 28th and my two GPUs have been humming away fairly steadily today. Looks like Corsair09 and umakemep might have fired up a GPU or two in addition to all of our regular contributors. From what I gather from the OPN1 supply update thread, it sounds like there were 12,500 remaining batches of OPNG units on April 21st and that about 300 were being released per day and thus we maybe had about 30 days left before all OPNG work units were depleted unless the researchers sent new ones. However, it seems like that number of batches per day probably shot up quite a bit yesterday and today, so I'm just enjoying crunching them while they're around and getting mentally prepared they might end at any time : )

Hope that spring is finally here for the Minnesotans. I read an article in the St. Cloud Times that mentioned it was the snowiest winter season there on record since the 1960s with over 88 inches. Hopefully that number will not get any bigger in May! : )

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Seems my prediction for the demise of WCG was a little premature. Apologies. They seem to have pulled a rabbit out of a hat after being down for a month or however long that was. Not only are we back but have also unleashed the stream of GPU work units we are now seeing, which is a welcome addition. Still a few hiccups here and there. Good day.

Good to hear from both of you. With the release of all those GPU units, I see impressive numbers. Both of you must be keeping the machines humming.
My last snow pile finally melted about 4 days ago. Now you still see some impressive snow piles in the parking lots of a few places, but they look pretty bad. They are almost universally black or dark brown from all the dirt on their surface. That dirt layer acts as an insulator, so it would not surprise me to see a few remnants into June.
Unfortunately that relatively quick melt of all that snow has raised the water table where I live. It is probably about 1 inch (2.54 cm) higher than my basement floor. Thus I have water running across the floor. Fortunately, I do not have a finished basement and everything is stored off the floor. My sump pump runs about once every 30 seconds at the moment so at least that is keeping up. I am really looking forward to about a week of warm sunny days to lower the water table.
Crunch on.
Cheers
