Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Happy thanksgiving from Ham Lake MN. I’ll drop through Spicer tomorrow to see an old friend on the way back to Seattle. We were a little too aggressive on the drive here by only staying one night in the road. One the way back We will be a little more relaxed by making it two nights.

At least you are here for the mild weather. It is supposed to be in the upper 40's(F) tomorrow with no bad weather in the forecast, so hopefully you have uneventful and safe drive back. That New London-Spicer area is pretty scenic in the summer time.
It has been a cold November until the last couple of days, but I am thankful for warmer weather now because it means I don't have to freeze my fingers off putting up the Christmas lights. I always try to hold off until after Thanksgiving so I don't rush the season.
Cheers

Happy Thanksgiving! Sounds like an amazing road trip. And we might be crunching some snow in Western Washington by the time you get back, unusual for us.

We still have some snow here, but if it gets as warm as the forecast, most of it will be gone by the end of today. I did take advantage of the nice weather yesterday to take the mower off the lawn tractor and put the snowblower on it. I should have done it by the first of November, but I just procrastinated.
The good news is the new hens have finally started laying and I am now able to get my few regular customers their eggs. Those first ones are all about the same size as golf balls, but it won't take long now before they get to a more normal size. None of the customers complain about the size because they get the jumbo ones, when available, at the same price.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just got back. Drove through snow as we crossed into Idaho, but sunny Spokane didn't disappoint. We had snow fall as we crossed the cascades but sunny as we dropped elevation. Its even sunny in Bothell! What a nice surprise.

Glad you made a safe trip. I don't know anything about driving through the mountains, but I thought getting through the higher elevations would get a bit dicey this time of year because of snow.
The most experience I have ever had in hills of any height was the Black Hills about 45 years ago. My car at the time had a carburetor and it had some problems even though those hills are not that high. When we were back on the plains it ran just fine. I am guessing with the fuel injection and the computerized controls in the cars now that they self adjust.
With mild weather now I have completed hanging all my Christmas lights.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Thought I would stop by to see how crunching is going. Would have thought things would be back to normal by now but doesn’t look like it reading the forum. Won’t come back until it’s all fixed and running smooth.

I would say it is about 95% back. I have not run short of work units at all in the last couple of weeks, nor have there been any download or upload problems. I run with a 2 day cache and even though there are short times when the messages in my log say there are no OPN or MCM units available, I am still well supplied. I can not speak for any GPU units as I don't have any GPU capable of doing that work.
I will say my Windows machine crunches MCM units much quicker than either of my LInux machines. I have gradually brought a third machine on line, one of the Linux machines just to test the waters, and it is going well.
If the project stays stable, I may fire up another machine, but I have to watch the electric bill now that it is getting colder and the gas portion of the utility bill is starting to climb.
The really good news is the pullets have finally started to kick in and are starting to earn their keep after all the feed they have consumed.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

On my 32 thread Linux machine I got thrown for a little bit of a loop. I run mostly MCM on that machine with a 2 day cache. However there are two different kinds of MCM tasks, one is a LOO type and the other is NFCV type. The LOO type run in a bout 3+ hours and the NFCV type run about 7+ hours. I went through a whole rash of LOO type which lead to a substantial download of more MCM units, but they were all the NFCV type which take over twice as long. This throws BOINC's scheduling a bit out of whack. I almost made it, but had 9 work units which missed the deadline.
I have now modified the setting for this machine to lower the cache and have changed the number of MCM units allowed from unlimited to 64.
If there was not this much disparity to the duration of the units, it would not have been a problem.
On a I3770 Windows machine, just the opposite is true with the NCFV units running about 1.5 hours and the LOO units running about 2.75 hours. Too bad there is not way for WCG to direct the appropriate units to the machines which most efficiently crunch them.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just started again doing CPU work units on my AMD Ryzen 5950x machine again (32 thread) in addition to the GPU work that I have been doing, but those seem to have dried up as of late. The CPU units seem to be running smoothly with a good cache flow for the time being. Will crunch on for the time being as long as things are running well. Good day.
