Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Bearcat, let us know if you get work units for Mac OS with ARM cpu. The system requirements page is a little vague with regard to what CPU the MAC supports.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Not sure I will crunch with the mini. But will wait and see if others do and the wu's are crunching properly. But, looking at some intel chips similar to the M1. Still have some research to do.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

We are back. It will be interesting to see just how many members will continue to crunch and what daily production will be. Just waiting for them to release some work units.
Cheers
Hello fellow Minnesota Crunchers! Sgt.Joe, I agree it will be interesting to see how many members continue to crunch when WCG ramps back up.

Bearcat, let us know if you get work units for Mac OS with ARM cpu. The system requirements page is a little vague with regard to what CPU the MAC supports.
Element6, my guess would be that the ARM-based Apple Silicon chips should continue to work well in macOS computers as they did in 2020-2022 before WCG shut down for the transition. I did a lot of testing with an Apple Silicon M1-based Mac mini at the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021 and shared a lot of those results in the Apple M1 Chip and ARM thread. Once the work units start flowing again, I can definitely test and confirm if things are looking good on the Apple Silicon chips.

If anyone is using the new chips from intel, would like to know how well they crunch.
Bearcat, I'm also curious about the newer Intel chips and how far they've come. The latest I have right now is a 10th-gen chip (i7-10700) from a couple years ago, but in a couple of months I may be able to test on a 12th-gen Intel chip and will report back if I do. I believe the 10th-gen chips were using a 14 nm lithography whereas the 12th-gen chips use an enhanced 10 nm lithography, so I would hope that process shrink brings some efficiency gains with it. I'm also curious to test on a Apple Silicon M1 Pro chip too - it has 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores compared to the 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores that the M1 chip has, so I'm curious how it performs and what the power consumption looks like and resulting efficiency.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

As with all things Apple, I don't have any, but I am reading about performance on the the new M2. If anybody is going to be crunching on that it would be interesting to see how that performs.
Since I crunch on older Intel platforms (X56xx and E5-26xx), I continue to watch for more modern servers on the used market which should be more efficient. With the cost of electricity being what it is, I may only fire up one or two servers in addition to the household machine. I'll see when they start issuing work units.
Cheers

Hi folks! I've opened BOINC for the first time since Feb, reset the password and all that, doesn't seem like I've missed much so that's good. Maybe I'll get some of the test workunits sent my way.

So I've noticed my electrical bill is down appreciably from last summer, but it is cooler this year in the Seattle area. I've set my main PC to 33% where it used to be 100%, I'll probably step things up later but for now I like coming into a workspace that isn't extra warm. biggrin

Glad to hear from you. Yes, I too like the much smaller electric bill. I have gotten 2 batches of the test units - OPN and MCM, but none of the ARP units so far. If I remember correctly you guys had a punishing heat wave last year. Let's hope that doesn't recur.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I see crunching has started again finally. Got your email. What has to be done to start crunching again from the old WCG? Or do I just fire up computer and allow crunching? Will only be using my AMD hex to crunch for now.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

After reading some more threads, seems this was short lived. I'll hold off until its at full speed.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yes, it is back to fits and starts again. I am still getting a few here and there, but the queues are sparse.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I was in Minnesota over the weekend. My daughter and I flew in a for a few days with the grandparents. It was really GREEN. My daughter wants to move to Minnesota but there is no way I can get mom on board....She survived 5 yrs and it is a getting her to move back is a bridge too far.
