Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Snow on the ground, 20 degree weather. I may as well be back in Minnesota! My folks were in Seattle area for Christmas an brought the Minnesota weather. It was all good, it gave me an excuse not to see all of the tourist sights. We didn't dare attempt to drive up to Leavenworth in the cascades. We would have gotten snowed in. Mom and Dad flew back on Monday.

Winter his making its appearance felt here also. We have had about 7 to 8 inches (18 to cm) of snow total in several smaller snowfalls, so we probably have about 6 inches (15cm) on the ground. We had -15F (-26C) this morning as we enter into the coldest couple of weeks of winter on average. Lots of black ice on the roads which were quite slippery, especially around some of the intersections. The mantra now is drive very cautiously and leave plenty of space between you and the next guy. Nothing gives you that sinking feeling like hitting the brakes and feeling nothing slow down.
Thank goodness we don't get the snow you get in the mountains.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

A little frost on the pumpkin this morning -24F(-31C). The good thing is there is no wind, completely calm this morning. It is supposed to get above zero sometime this afternoon and be sunny. It will be a bit warmer tomorrow.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The cold weather is starting to break here. The rain has reduced the snow and we can now see green grass. I bumped up the core usage on my CPU to add a little more heat to the room; better use of energy than a space heater in my opinion.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

We hada power outage this morning. It was only out for about 1.5 hours. The weather was close to the freezing point with no wind so the house did not cool down much. It did wreak a little havoc with the machines though. I have numerous detached and errored work units. It could have been worse, it could have lasted a lot longer or the weather could have been a lot colder.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Back on the weather roller coaster this morning. We had a high of 42F(5.5C) yesterday to a low this morning of -4F(-20C). It was nice to see the sun for while and get the ice off of the end of my driveway. Looks like we will be a bit on the cool side for the next few days, but the days are getting longer and it looks like the temperature will be moderating in a week or so.
We never did hear what caused the power outage the other day, but suspect it was either someone took out a power pole or squirrels got into someplace they did not belong. It could have been worse. All the machines came back up with no apparent corruption of files.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Power outages suck. Reason why I have a generator. With all coal plants shutting down soon, now new nuclear plants being built, and these idiots relying on wind and solar, a generator is a must have item. You would think after seeing what texas went through last winter trying this out, they would reconsider.

There is something to be said for base load stability. I really don't have a problem with wind, solar, geothermal and other alternatives for the electrical supply. Personally I would like to see more nuclear as I don't have any problem with that technology, even though we have to safely store some nuclear waste. The problems of storing nuclear waste are political, not technological.
I am continually hopeful the scientists will get get fusion commercially viable, but it always seems it is at least 10 years away. If they can get that working, that would go a long way to solving our electrical problems for a long, long time. It would virtually eliminate the problem of radioactive nuclear waste.
I have been thinking of buying one of those inverter generators with enough power to keep the furnace running and the freezer cold.
Cheers
